Title: The milling machine stand
Post by: Bigbadbugga on July 01, 2014, 02:44:36 PM

Well made a start today on the stand frame, it's pretty substantial.

It's all made from scrap I had lying around left over from other projects, and that means that some of it looks a bit scummy, but it's all solid 3mm wall box.

First I cut the two rear legs from 100x50x3 RHS. Both 900mm long.

That saw has served me well for ten years now, next project will be a decent trolley for it.

The two front legs are shorter for a reason that will become obvious later. They are 50x50x3 RHS and 750mm long.

Then the side rails, two top ones are 50x25x3 RHS and 450mm long, the bottom rails are 650mm long.

Then I cut two pieces of the 100x50x3 at 125mm long and tack welded the two sides together to make two of these....

Now you can see the reason for the shorter front legs.

I then joined the two halves making the whole thing 700mm wide to leave me with a basic frame, I only used 25mm square for the lower braces as that's all I had left....

Then added two braces set the right distance to bolt the mill base to.

Tomorrow I'll fully weld it all, clean it down and give it a coat of paint :)

Nice job but I would have added either diagonal bracing or some sheet material to stop it twisting.
It's what I've done with my wooden benches.

It's getting skinned in 1mm steel. And some drawers and a cupboard in the bottom.

The step will be covered with either Ali tread plate or steel with a ribbed rubber cover for use as a footrest.

I'll also be making up some decent levelling feet too as my workshop floor isn't the greatest level playground.

Ah, that should do it!

Oops, sorry, I forgot to take pics as I went today.

Got the frame fully welded and rubbed down, then painted.

Then I did some work on a mates car while the paint dried.

Then I riveted some steel to the back and sides. This will get painted too, probably sprayed for a nice finish.

Here's were I'm up to...
