Title: Face mill arbor source
Post by: scottmk1 on June 17, 2014, 03:25:43 PM
Hi folks, I would like to buy this http://www.jbcuttingtools.com/epages/es461493.sf/sec9f4eb4da75/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es461493/Products/400R-50-22-4T face mill for use on my mill/drill however I cannot find an arbor to suit, I need a MT3 shank with a 12mm drawbar thread, and obviously  22mm spigot to suit the bore in the face mill. Can anyone suggest a source? Also what do you guys think to the turning and boring tools for lathes on that site? They seem well priced compared to other online sources, and you get a variety of tip sizes too.

Scott,
You don't say where abouts in the universe  you are....
Give us a clue...

Here in the UK, there are several suppliers, RDG, ArcEurotrade, Chronos and others that may have what you need.....

ArcEuro do some soft end arbors....,you could machine one of them to suit your face mill bore, then drill and tap the end of the arbor to retain the cutter.....ok it won't be keyed to the shaft, but that has to be better than jammed cutter/burnt out motor/stripped gear teeth.....

How about these?

060-300-00600 or 060-281-00322 on offer at ArcEuro.....?
Any good?

You could turn your own 22mm spigot with a reduced 18mm end to fit a MT3 collet.

Thanks for the link Joe - I have added it to my watch list for just now. The kind people at JB Tools are also going to see if they can source one for me.

It's not very long ago I bought a "Glanze" 50 mm interchangeable carbide tip end milling cutter. MT3 shank with a 12 mm drawbar thread  !  I think that it was from Chronos.  I don't recall paying that much for it.  I can't lay my hands on the invoice at the moment.

Chronos do a Glanze 3 tipped indexable end mill for about £45 but its out of stock. I might get in touch with them tomorrow and see when they expect to get more stock. They also do a Facemill by Glanze for about £150 but I dont want to spend that much on one.

If its any help,  I'm very happy with mine.  Originally I bought mine because I was having a problem with a fly cutter and discovering that it flexed !  It all started when I was truing up my mill vice surfaces.  When the fly cutter came to a hard patch in the cast iron it flexed and rubbed.  I kept finding that one end of the vice was consistently higher than the other.  The cure was the Glanze cutter.  That doesn't flex and I got a lovely surface finish.

Ok that sounds good Baron. I see you can order direct frome Glanze too, rather than going through Chronos.
