Title: How do I remove the motor from a HM45/RF45 Mill drill?

My Hafco HM 45 Mill/drill has stopped working. The switch is fine so it looks like the motor needs attention.

I have removed the bolts holding the motor to the head but it seems to be hitting on something in the gearbox that stops me from lifting it off.

From photos, the HM45 looks to be very similar to the RF 45 Mill/drill.

Can anybody suggest a solution?

On my RF45 clone the motor would simply lift out.

It's shaft goes into a gear/shaft which it's keyed to.

It may simply be a bit stuck therefore, it will need to be lifted 'exactly vertically' if you see what I mean. You just need to 'jiggle' a bit it I'd imagine.

Same here motors got a key way with a woodruff key in that slides down in to the casting and drive dog.
Just prise it up at 3 or 4 corners.
Tried the relay in the box at the back or the switches?

Be thankful you havent got to remove the head casting, then friggin two gear selectors.

Loply: thanks for that, I will try a judicious "jiggle" and see what happens.

Jonny: thanks also - I hope the woodruff key does not fall out into the gearbox. I checked the switch and it seems to be working properly. I don't see a relay on the machine but I am wondering if the centrifugal switch might be accessible and be replaceable if it is the cause of the trouble. And yes, I will avoid taking the top off until the last minute.

tekfab: it can happen - immediately after muttering the magic words "bugger this, I won't be beaten". :lol:

Job done, thanks to you blokes.

loply: yes, it just needed to be lifted vertically; not even jiggled.

jonny: the force was with me. The key did not drop into the gearbox (I still need to replace the motor later of course)

tekfab: if nothing fell in inside, I escaped the full strip down.

Good stuff, when you put motor back on see if you can slightly angle the key. It will straighten up when slid over.

Theres many variations of same machine, yours looks like a short bed with elevation handle and locks on left.

Check the caps first a new motor will be costly compared to a new machine.
ie elevation transfer box for mine was £244 excluding the motor, whole new machine was £930. Its where these Chinese machines sting you, same with others. Motor for RF25 was £256 any years ago (12) new machine £800.
