Title: Planer Blade Sharpening Jig

Hi Guys
               I have not sharpened my 10 inch Planer Blades for ages, there is always something more important. Finally when the piece of timber I was thicknessing turned out to be convex, it became a necessity. On removal it was quite obvious why my planed timber was unacceptable, the blades were well bowed. It is rarely that I use the full 10" width of the table, and I know that I should use different parts of the table to obtain even blade wear, I am inexplicably drawn to feed timber to the center of the table.
               Last time I ground the blades on a bench grinder by hand, unfortunately the diameter of the motor body was larger than the diameter of the abrasive wheels, so could not grind the blades in a continuous pass. This resulted in an an excessive amount of time expended to complete the job.
               I recently acquired an additional bench grinder having a motor body smaller than the wheels, and decided to design a little sliding jig for the blades. When I am designing a new project, after scribbling a few sketches, I always make a prototype in wood,  to avoid unforeseen problems before working in metal.

The grinder rest has a slot for the sliding jig, the final pic shows the jig ready for use. The jig was tested an worked very well.  The finish on the blades was straight and true. The time saving unbelievable, 10 minuets for both blades.

You remind me I need to sort mine out  :scratch:

You may have seen my big Dominion combination wood working machine in the new from old forum. It has 16" blades. There was an option sold for it when new that clamped the blades to the circular saw fence, and allowed a white grit stone to be mounted on the cross cut / radial saw spindle to sharpen the blades. Simple enough jig to make so I suppose I'd better get my head down and get on with it !!!
