Title: Weed Eater cutter mod
Post by: Chuck in E. TN on January 20, 2014, 01:33:22 PM
I wish to make a modified cutter head for my weed eater. I have several clumps of pampas grass and other tough stuff to cut back before the new growth starts. I know most folks burn them back, but some are not in a good place for that, such as too close to the house, on the property line, in fences and among plants/shrubs I want to keep. Standard weed eater string just doesn’t stand up to the task.
The head I want to make will use either swiveling hard blades or wire cable segments on screw eyes, attached to a hub that will screw onto the driveshaft of the weed eater.
Has anyone made something like this? I need ideas…

The best advise that I can give you is don't build it. As Angus has said,

.

I am also going to lock this thread as MaddModder can't be responsible for some of the ideas that are sure to be generated by a thread like this.  :D

Cheers

I think what you want Chuck, is something like this: (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1335608)

Or even something like This: (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10946282)

You can even pick them up for cheap on EBAY (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pivo-Trim-trimmer-Head-Fits-all-gas-trimmers-PIVOTRIM-/171140321026?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d8c20f02).

With how cheap they are, It might not even be worth the time or savings to DIY. I certainly wouldn't put a circular saw blade on one!

I unlocked the thread. It can be a good discussion.

I had a petrol strimmer with a brush cutter blade looked like a saw blade with rounded corners , cut brambles down but very noisy , you can get blades for tough grass http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STIHL-BRUSHCUTTER-STRIMMER-4-TOOTH-BLADE-4001-713-3801-/131039660476#ht_1338wt_1063 over hear .

Chuck.
I used to trim pampas grass clumps, with an electric hedge trimmer.

Then tidy up, with hand shears......

I've often thought about having a modified head that would take a 2mm dia steel wire instead of the 2mm dia nylon. Perhaps stainless steel wire, probably not an automatic feed but 2 fixed lengths and when they are too short to reach they have to be replaced.
I thought someone had done a post on here using steel wire instead of nylon but I can't seem to find anything. :palm: Anyone know?

Chuck, I have four patches of Pampas grass that, combined, covers approximately 12 ~ 15 square feet of ground. I cut it back every year using a common, Black & Decker, AC powered, hedge trimmer. I first tie a rope around a batch near the top so I don't get buried in falling grass as it is cut.

dsquire,
You can relax, now. I bought a straight shafted brush cutter attachement for my weed eater. If I have to design and build something better I will, and send you all the bill...
Thanks for the constructive and even the not so constructive input. I don't really think MadModders could be held responsible for me hurting myself on my own property with a device of my own making, but thanks for caring.  :poke:

Well found David - Thanks.          The reason I didn't find anything was because I was looking for a photo  :bang: I went through all 50 (odd) pages of John S. posts but looking for a photo.  :bang:

Chuck

I have had a good nights sleep and read a few other coments and am relaxed.  :D

If you have to design and build something better you best get a PO first otherwise when you and send the bill it won't get paidl...

I don't believe MadModders would be responsible for you hurting yourself on your own property with a device of your own making. If someone else followed your instructions and built one and it malfunctioned and injured someone then you, MadModders and others could possibly face a lawsuit. Unfortunately their are people out there just looking for an excuse to sue somebody.  :D :)

Kinda reminds me of when I was in Thailand with the Air Force. If you took a taxi and it got into an accident, the other party could sue you.  'Cause if you hadn't hired the taxi, it wouldn't have been there and the accident would not have happened. And if you killed a chicken in the accident, you paid for the chicken, the eggs it would have laid, the chicks it would have hatched, and ...
