Title: Pin spanner

I have stripped the head of my newly acquired (but not new) mini mill to fit a new bearing that I was given with the mill.  While it was in bits I have taken the opportunity to clean and inspect the other bearings.  On reassembly my collection of pointed objects, bent rods, fine nose pliers was defeated by an adjustment nut in a recess.  So I made a special tool.

First take some bits from the scrap pile.

Cut them to size

Drill eight holes, tap two of them (not strictly necessary for this application but I thought it might be useful in the future).

Cut the heads off a couple of bolts to make them fit in the lathe easier and turn the ends down to 5mm.  Assemble with nuts and bolts.  The double lock nuts are to make the pins stiffer in the recess.

Thanks everyone.  It never ceases to amaze me how much easier a job can become when you have the proper tool.  If there's a lesson for me here it is that it's quicker in the long run to make the tool rather than struggle until you have to make the tool.

That reminds me Russell i must make one of those only bigger to hold Scooter variators when trying to undo the nut..

Lyn, I don't know how much torque you need for a scooter variator so you might need a longer version but this one will fit quite large nuts - even larger if I use a file to relieve the corner of the moving arm.

Will need bigger handles Russell as most scoots you need at least 90bls foot and  110 on the larger engined jobs. ( 500 and 650cc )
