Title: PeterE's New Pin Vice
Post by: PeterE on June 30, 2013, 09:18:44 AM
Bored half to I don't know what, as I am currently recovering from a dislocated shoulder requiring operation (re-attach one of the ligaments among other things) I wanted to do at least something

I decided that I needed a slightly larger pin vice than the small ones I have. So starting with a piece of 15x15 BMS I set it up for a long thin hole ...

A lot of peck-drilling later the hole was 95 mm deep (at 3mm dia), which I the opened to 4 mm.

The hole is the one through the handle which then was the next task. Removing the squareness and down to 12 mm dia there was a bit of knurling as well. After that I took the dia further down to 10 mm to fit my instrument vice and gave the bit some general clean-up.

Next on to the mill to make the jaws. A 12 mm dia slot drill made this short work started by a 10 mm through-hole. The "head" or jaws was also made rectanglurar by removing 3 mm down to 12 for better proportions. some more clean-up and it looked as follows.

To finalize I added a screw with a wing-nut and slitted the top into jaws.

Turned out fairly OK in spite of being done basically one-handed using the machines. Then test-fitted it in the vice.

It will be a usefull addition to the tooling set I think.

Thanks Rob, and yes, the screw will get a 2 mm cross-hole to let thin rods through.

<edit> Unfortunately your comment pass me by tekfab, this since my mother tongue is Swedish not English, and I am most certainly unaware of many dual meanings in English.

Sorry for that.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for kind comments.

Yes, I also made the instrument vice. It is based on a casting bought from College Engineering Supplies in UK and some bits from the box of useful stuff.
