Title: Making a boring head.
Post by: modeldozer on March 31, 2013, 09:56:37 AM
Hi all,

Needed a boring head and decided to make my own as explained in "Milling a complete course" by Harrold Hall.

Pretty much followed the instructions and sequence in the book.

Fly cutting the contact surface after cutting the dovetail in the body.

Cutting the slots for the arbor.

Marking out and drilling holes in the cutter carrier.

Joined by two other little tools recently made.

And fitted on the mill.

This was a nice project to learn more advanced skills and I am very happy with the outcome.  Had the opportunity to use the boring head on another project and it works perfectly.

Cheers to all.

Abraham

Great to have this, Abraham. Thanks! Coincidentally I had sent for the Harold Hall book a couple weeks ago -- hasn't arrived yet, but that's one of the projects I was interested in.

Wow, nice work. Both the job and the explain.

That is a hefty piece of steel you have there, that will smooth out the cutting too. Great.

Personally I would break the corners a little more, they seems sharp.
But, talking about sharp, great dial you made there, very clear markings. You have convinced me that I need to start thinking about an indexer on my lathe too, it looks very well done.

Ah well, plans and plans and plans and....
