Title: Chuck question
Post by: caskwith on September 02, 2012, 02:01:40 PM
I have aquired a 4" 3 jaw Pratt Bernerd model 30m that is marked specially designed for the ML7 lathe. While a little on the older side it appears to be in good condition, only problem is that I only have a set of "inside" jaws and I would ideally like to have a set of the outside jaws as well. Is this going to be an easy task to find a set? Are all 4" chuck jaws created equal?

Have a word with Rotagrip they should be able to help, though genuine jaws may cost more than you paid for the chuck

Ouch you are right! A quick look at their site and a set of outside jaws costs over twice as much as I paid for the 3 jaw chuck and a 4 jaw chuck! Guess I will have to trawl ebay and hope for some luck!

Well I was in luck. I have another Burnerd 4" chuck, well used that is permantly set on a homemade tool. I had the outisde jaws for that chuck and a few measurements showed they should fit, needed to file burrs of the new chuck body but after 5 mins work with a fine fine and a good clean and they fit great, looking like they centre very well also. I will grind them in situ when i have a chance just toe make sure everything lines up nicely but in all I am happy and it didn't cost me £150!
