Title: Improved Run Simpson and Shipton Engine
Post by: sbwhart on April 25, 2012, 02:01:45 PM
Well:- I thinks I've got this sorted now.

I made a new piston from cast Iron, I also re sculptured the base to gain better access.

I can now get it ticking over at 5psi  and and full pressure of 60 psi it does 850 rpm

Oh you guy's are driving me up the wall with these fantastic engines - 8 whole months more before I can retire - Stew a fantasic engine  :jaw: and it looks hugely complicated as well.

Very pleased you've sorted it, Stew!

I love to see an engine which, does something. And that one really dances.......  :D

Well done!

Another grand job Stew.   I think you have now won first prize-----which is, :coffee:-----you can now play with your new engine.

Cheers  Dek  :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:

P.S. I do'nt know what went wrong, but i put this same post on here 10 mins after your first post this morning. Only just noticed it did not appear ??????

This ones got more wiggly bits than a beuty contest John

Cheers Dek I'll be round for a visit to men in sheds with you to see if they can machine the hard wood base for me.

Well done Stew, that's like a different engine now

Thanks Nick

Still not 100% happy with it, I took the end play out of the fly wheel spindle to try and get rid of the wobble, and its made it more air hungry, strange but it seems very sensitive to the fly wheel, for some reason it will turn over ok by hand with the fly wheel off put the fly wheel on and the linkage locks up, I think its taking up the play and changes the angular relationship of the links.

I've just ordered a 7" flywheel casting, I think this will help smooth things out, and look more in proportion.

Pics i've found of Antony Mounts engine all have bigger fly wheels.

Looks like you're definitely getting there Stew

Apart from your flywheel issues it looks and runs great

Interesting that it makes such a difference with the flywheel... Does it need some kind of extra support to take flex out of the crank? either the centre or the ends?

Dunno... Just throwing up ideas for someone to shoot down  :D

I'm sure you'll get it sorted :borg:

Ralph.

I think you may have a point there Ralph it may need a bearing either side of the fly wheel.

Stew
That has been a wonderful build and I'm afraid that you will not be able to top this one. I'm patiently waiting for the next. I am impressed the talent in one individual, you have been blessed. And we are the ones that sit back and enjoy the craftmanship. Top shelf, and not can take that away.

She sure runs beautifully in the video, Stew.  That is one entertaining engine to watch!
If anyone asks "What does it do?", tell 'em, "Just look at it!".  It's "doing" all the time!  ; )
Very nice.  Very nice!!

Thanks Nelson and Dean

On Friday I took delivery of a 7" flywheel casting from RDG.

Good quality a few blow holes on the rim but nothing that couldn't be skimmed out or filled.

This morning I finished off machining it and tried it out on the engine.

It's more in proportion to the fly wheel in the etching of the original.

Its improved the engine running considerably, it now runs at about 10 - 15 psi at about 100 RPM at full pressure of 60 psi it runs at 550 down from 850 for the 4" wheel. Still got an horrendous wobbly on the wheel but that's down to the single bearing support, I'm hoping to get some plate delivered next week that will allow me to double up the bearing supports on the fly wheel that should smooth things out even more.

I'm now about 99% happy with this engine

  :D :D :D :D :D :D

Good luck with the wobbble.........

Yep, that flywheel definitely looks more in-keeping with the rest of the engine.  That's all it can be, not enough support from the bearings so the weight of the flywheel is pushing things out of line. Failing another set of bearings is there provision to fit the smaller flywheel / pulley on the other side?

I think it would still need another bearing on that side as well.

or  -  leave the flywheel in the middle and extend the crank - and support the current outboard end with another cylinder?

(says Dave, hiding under the table)
