Morning,
I managed to pick up a brand new 5/16 UNC spiral flute tap for pennies. It doesnt feel like its made of steel though, looks more like a ceramic finish to it.
My question is, would this be ok to use as a plug tap in stainless steel please?

The surface can be misleading with all sorts of coatings - however is there a coloured band on it? if so, what make is it?
Yellow is usually general purpose and Red for high tensile; BUT then depending on maker, typical coding is Green = stainless and Blue = aluminium (however Guhring have Blue for stainless !)

My mistake - it is HSS, worked like a treat :)

I recently compared a few "colour band" charts and there seems to be very little standardization there. WATCH OUT!

Just curious, but isn't there some laser-marked letters, numbers, and or logo's on the shank of the tap?
