Title: Steam crane
Post by: BK on October 16, 2011, 12:36:12 AM
I started this in May, it's virtually finished, but I'm still tweaking it.
The main jib is 40" long and the fly is 18", the engine on the lower deck works the slew and a feedwater pump, the twin on the mid deck works the winches.
The winches work with a sliding "dog" clutch between them, the feed water pump runs with the engine, but returns the water to the tank until a valve is closed, then it feeds the boiler.
The boiler is a center flue with cross tubes and works well on the 2" gas burner.
The rope was a bit of a problem re. stretching and twisting, so that's braided fishing line, no stretch, no memory, it works good.
The jib is galv sheet, I bent all the angles and it's all soldered.
I'm happy with the result, all trial and error.....and a bit of crane driving experience.   :) :)

That looks very interesting and nicely built. Any chance that we could see a few more pictures showing some of the details. Thanks in advance BK.  :D :D

Andy, galv is good to solder, just use killed spirits (hydrochloric acid, and add bits of galv till it stops bubbling) or a good "soldering fluid"

I don't like doing this, but, the build is on another forum, here.

It will take a bit of wadeing through, there's 31 pages :jaw: :bugeye:

Bernie.....

Thanks, so much for showing this project on Modder!

As you know, I started watching at the beginning, (page 1).
But, somehow got lost along the way...... Not picking up until the very end. By then you had returned to your previous build.

Please, let the fuss die down on this masterpiece. Then, show us what else you've built.

No problem at all, giving a link to Steamtoys...... I do it regularly, both ways!

It's really great, seeing you posting "over here", too........  :D

BK,

Just scanned through the 31 pages. That's one hell of a build. Very nice. From what I saw you didn't have any plans correct?.

I'd love to build something like that, but wonder if I'll have the time with all my other projects.  :palm:

Like to see a video of it operating if that's at all possible. Thnaks for posting that.

Bernd

BK

I have followed your link and watched all 31 pages of your build and enjoyed every page of it. This build certainly does give you the opportunity to practise your soldering skills. For not working from a plan it sure seems to have worked out to be very scale like in appearance. Thanks for taking the time to document all this so that we might watch over your shoulder.  :D :D

Cheers
