Hi Dave

didn't Fred Dibnah demolish a wall or gate post with his steam  engine
I think they don't have any brakes

Hi John

Yes, you're right, he did. Got it on a DVD somewhere. I think they do have brakes, 'cos on another (?) DVD he's scrounging some poplar, IIRC, for brake blocks.

To quote one of the characters in "All Gas and Gaiters", "Oh, Calamity".
To quote me, "Ouch"

They do have brakes, but steel tyres have little or no grip.

I do not think they do have brakes as we know them, some had a hardwood block that could lock one or two rear wheels for parking purposes but nothing that would be usable to control a downhill run-away.

As far as I know the way to slow and stop them is by use of the reversing lever and it is really bad news if the machine gets out of gear on a downhill run or worse yet if it strips a pinion.

I didnīt see anything resembling the front wheels (or axle) there, unless thereīs one below the caravan. Maybe they parted company when it hit the car? It also seems to have dug quite deep in the ground before hitting the wall.
Might (or should) there have been a man walking in front of it, waving a red flag? Is that particular piece of British legislation still in vigour?

Hmmmmm..... the flat rear tyres make me think this might be a road roller.
See how the roller is carried on a bracket extending from the front of the smoke box and see how the crashed machine has a broken casting in that area?

I think this is a steam roller and quite a big chunk of it is further down the road!

Another look, and yes, youīre right. Iīd also bet it is/was a road roller. See the text (S.KAVANAGH, ROAD CONTRACTOR, SURREY.), which is probably original, and there are also the scraper boards in the back wheels, to scrape the tar + stones off them. Thatīs a big casting to solder back together...  :bang:  :bang:  :bang:

It wouldn't have mattered if he did have brakes, once you get steel sliding on a smooth surface, it is just as though it is on ice. Plus the fact the two trailers were adding to the downslope force.

Many more years of hard work and pocket dipping to get that back into working condition.

Fred did have an altercation with a stone built object...I was watching the video of him yesterday and he described how it came about..

Apparantly he was shifting some stone blocks on the back of a trailer and was negotiating a downhill slope at some 40 mile an hour...He decided to stop the steam roller by 'crashing' it into what is now a stone block of somewhat smaller proportion after it had been rebuilt...He went on to say that if his traction engine had been roadworthy it would have saved him a lot of grief......
