After Stews recent post on his vice and my comment about not being happy with my vice, I thought I was in real luck today when I picked up this Draper Machine Vice. The vice was rusted closed but when I got it home and got a bit of WD40 on it to open the jaws, I found the bottom surface had damaged hole marks

OK, no sweat, I`ll mill a slot in the base and then bolt the new surface piece in place. At this point, note the 6 screws right at the front of the vice?!?
So I removed the base.... what is with the base piece? I`m just curious but I can`t see what it does since the main casting is the same shape and could be clamped??

Started to unscrew the random bolts at the front....wondering what the heck these are for and then....

Oh dear, perhaps this is one for re-weighing in as scrap!! Certainly not time at present for any :proj: on this one but perhaps on the top shelf for future. I`m guess a hole new bottom plate with fixed jaw would need to be machined?
Anyway, I think I may have been rescued from my vice predicament..... :ddb: :ddb: thanks to a fellow madmodder!

Pish! A bit of spit'n'polish, bolt it all back together nice & tight like, and whack it on eBay. £££££££ man!

You yung un's don't know your born. When If first started engineering my milling vice was a couple of old clothes pegs!
Trying to stop your work moving whilst milling using a rusty nail for a cutter in a hand cranked drill was the sign of a dedicated engineer.
I'd have killed for a vice like that...

get sum cast welding rods and weld it up

Polish it up a bit, it would make a dam fine paper weight. :lol: :lol:

You could tig that up with some stainless rods... 316 or 306 or the like, they have to be either stainless or cast iron rods to weld properly because of the nickel content. Ive done a similar repair on a LARGE machine vice I have.
I welded it cold, because there are two camps, one preheat and post heat carefully for hours on end, or other just hit it cold and both seem successful, ive done the same process on my jcb cylinder head I just repaired also...
