Hi
I have posted some pictures of this engine in my "casting brass" thread.
I thought it would be a good idea to do a build log of this engine.
I share my shop with a good friend , so any rough bits are his work :D :D :D
This is the basic speck of the engine
Bore 1.875", Stroke 2.000"
Rated 2hp
400RPM 120 PSI
Stephensen Reverse
Double Acting V twin
The drawings are imperial desighned to be built without castings
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6010097.jpg)
The base plate milled out of 10 mm plate (drawings use 1/4 but i had this to hand)
Using thicker plate caused some problems later.

Getting the base plate & back plate at 90 degrees proved difficult
I will find some of the early pictures & post them

As this engine is about half way built the build log will be in fast speed :D :D :D

This is how it should look
Cylinders were made from 2 large pices of steel (to do it again i would cast bronze)

Had the old bantam lathe working hard

Tomorrow it will be the steam ports

The valve ports were machined on my Axminster mill drill . This has been replaced by a Warco 626 mill

Hi John, appreciate your sharing pictures and some of the build log with us, particularly on a working engine, as those are all to seldom shown on such a forum, or should I say so seldom done at all, given the ease of just buying a small engine made somewhere else. I am impressed with the numbers, 2 hp at 400 rpm, you are looking for a good bit of torque out of it, I hope it turns out without too many irritating bits and pieces. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it run, it looks like a good start. mad jack

Hi
After a bit of a traumatic family time i have eventually motovaited my self in to finishing this engine.
After meeting Rob Wilson i am converted to casting :) :) :) :)
The drawings ask for the trunk guides to be fabricated from iron pipe , bronze castings will be better :) :) :)
This is my first attempt at propper pattern making (i dont like wood)
Some pices of MDF glued together
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PA270027.jpg)
All turned up and primed
Plenty of rubbing down later
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PA270034.jpg)
I must admit i am very pleased
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PA270033.jpg)
Now for the core box
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PA270029.jpg)
Same again MDF (magic wood) glued together boring the hole was interesting

(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PA270032.jpg)It turned out better than expected

Hello John, I can't say I've enjoyed a video more than the very professional looking operation you and Rob put on with this casting. The finish on the good one was great, clean, and should do you well in your engine, and the one with the sand a bit moist was very instructive, particularly that you immediately noted problems and stopped before a mess was made. It almost looks like it was done deliberately bad, just to make a good show on what to do when it goes wrong. I hope to be doing some casting of the same sort in the not too distant future. It really makes it all to have the whole of it, from the ramming up, ramming the sprues, carving the pouring funnels, all the way from beginning to finished casting, laying on the ground, looking ready for turning, and then turning. Fine piece of work there, with the video, and well complimenting the work on the cores, boxes, and patterns. Truly instructional :jaw: :bugeye:  mad jack
-
What kept the core in the center of the mold cavity?
-
The pattern has extension peices (core prints) the core just rests in these
