Nice job! I like your plastic belt sheild! My belt snapped and flew off last week and I got a wack across the neck with it...I need a shield. Did you make that?

Chris,
The shield is an afterthought Just for that reason.  I'm big on shop safety and that belt is spinning at eye level!

I did make this one.  It's just three pieces of plexiglass glued together.  I was going to bend it but this 1/4" stuff alwaws cracks on me.

I'll drill and tap for screws when I get it installed.  I was thinking I'd add a top piece if thee was clearance...

Very nice job on that belt drive.

We're going to need a picture of it all mounted on the mill though.  :poke:

Bernd,
I had to extend the wires to the motor, far too short.  Luckily I had one of these plastic metal lined flexible conduits on hand.

It's about half as quiet as before. It works well.  It might run in a bit and quieten down a bit more..
I like the mod!

Thanks Bernd.

I'm still kind of impressed that the thing works :zap:.  I printed a set of plans and followed them as accurately as I could and it just all went together, no test fitting untill the install.  It feels good to make something practical on the mill.   :)

Are you going to make a shield for yours?

Barry, Where did the plans come from ? I fancy doing a set but using poly vee belts as thry drive better than V belts over small pullies.

it'll be a while before I get to doing a conversion the on the mill. To many projects ahead of the mill right now. I'll just have to suffer with the gear noise.  :)

Hi Guys, that's a nice job on your X2. I am thinking about doing the same to my Micro Mark Mini Mill. WHere did you get your kit if I may ask?

Nice Job

Ok there are several variations on the X2 mill kit...

There's the kit from Sterling Steele...  http://www.stirlingsteele.com/beltdrive.html  which is the same as the one stocked by    http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2560&category=

and there's the conversion done by Jerry Rollett over on the Yahoo minimill group...His plans are downloadable for free but you may have to join the group.

I used Jerry's plans for my X2 but found there were differences between his dimensions and the dims for my mill, so I had to machine parts on the fly....

Changing to belt drive is the best inprovement that anyone can make to their minimill imho...

I second that. The belt drive has gotta be the best mod for the X2, so much quieter and smoother, a higher top speed (almost double the stock speed) and no worries about crunching the gears or flycutting

Tim,

Thanks for the support... :)

Chaps, if anyone wants the plans I have for the JR conversion pm me if you dont want to join the Yahoo group...As the drawings are in the public domain, ( by joining the group) I don't think there's any copyright issue..

I looked at the yahoo group plans and they were not as neat as those by 'Daniel Kemp'.
I found them here:
http://www.hossmachine.info/projects_6.html#belt conversion (http://www.hossmachine.info/projects_6.html#belt conversion)

It's a fun project to do also.

Just as an aside,

I also changed the stock bearings for taper rollers...
