Title: ER32 Collet Holder
Post by: raynerd on January 17, 2010, 03:04:55 PM
Hi,
I`ve been wanting a little shelf holder for my ER32 collets. Does anyone know where one can be purchased or has anyone made on themself? Any pictures would be welcome. I know in essence it is just a sheet with holes in that will allow the collets to sit in on their shoulder but some pictures as to designs would be great

Chris

Don't use ER32s, but is this what you are referring to?

Chris, my ER25 collets came in a wooden box with holes for them to sit in, but this glorified pipe-rack I made for general taper tooling might give you ideas

It's made out of cheap white HD polyethylene kitchen chopping boards (I used old, scratched ones), sawn up and held together with self-tappers. It has a solid back, to keep it squared up.
HDPE is easy to work, won't scratch collets like metal might, and doesn't give you splinters like wood.

I just finished this one for ER32 & ER16 collets plus a few chucks.  I made it from some red translucent plastic sign material I picked up on the side of the road after a windstorm.  Laid it out in CAD and juggled the holes 'til I was happy.  Tile printed it and taped it onto the plastic then drilled the holes with forstner bits.

DB, your holder rocks.  I had to stick a shot of it on my own web site.

Cheers,

Well thanks Bob, I appreciate the kind words.  Funny how sometimes one struggles to get a decent pic that doesn't make a project look worse than reality.  In this case I snapped one quick shot to see how it looked on the monitor and and it came out looking better than the real thing. ::)

Made with an old biscuit tin (other brands not now owned by makers of plastic cheese are available), some Roofmate insulation from work (fantastic stuff), some CAD, a CNC Taig mill and a tapered endmill from Drill Service, Horley. You could file up a tapered spade bit from a piece of old tin can, add a shank and spin in the drill press for the same effect.

I think I would feel a bit uncomfortable if I walked into a machine shop and saw a big purple tin labeled "FINGERS" sitting on the bench.  I'd surely be reluctant to open it.

The time to worry is when you have to call for someone with enough fingers left to get the tin open.
