Snowing here in South Yorkshire, UK.

Global warming, innit...

(nothing here over Liverpool way, except it's chuffing cold - keeping warm in the workshop will be a challenge this evening)

It's not snowing here today but did so a couple of times this past week - gave the snowblower a couple of workouts.

But it was darn cold this morning -20C and it has warmed up to -17C (so far but not expecting much more today).

Amaizing to think Ottawa is on the same line as the middle of France and NY as far down as Spain ....

Thankfully we have the Gulf Stream or we would be telling you how cold it is ..... doesn't bear thinking about ....

That's why it snows in NY. It's thanks to those Canuks up there sending us that darn cold wind. Ever here of that term called the Canada Express. It ain't no train. Not in winter anyway.

Ok, I'm now putting on my asbestos suit because after that comment I know there are going to be some guys north of the 40 who are going to send fireballs my way.

You best get the fires well stoked and probably 3 top quality snow mobile suits covering your bod. You ain't seen nothin yet. I'm going to give you a fightin chance and give you a few days to prepare before I send the COLD Canadian Express your way.

I think it's rather a sad state of affairs. If the kids and mums can manage to get there then it can only be an excuse on the authorities part.

I wonder how many other workers will be given the day off so off handedly.

The main problem of course is all the parents that "have" to go to work with kids now at home.

The schools and coledges are shut here and there is not even any snow on the roads

The postman has just delivered.

FINALLY, it's started snowing here in the Wirral - having missed out on all the pre-xmas snow. First snow I've seen in 3 years (but then, this is the first UK winter I've seen for 3 years, having successfully avoided the last 2).

The reason schools close the instant there's a threat of snow is simple: insurance. If little Johnny or Chavette fall over on a snowed-up playground & hurt themselves (whether it's just bruised pride, right up to broken limbs), Miss Chavette - the single mum - will sue the school/LEA for everything they can get; and, given the court's predilection to pay the "victim" in such cases (q.v. the McDonalds "hot coffee" case in the US, and a similar one here in the UK), not to mention the ambulance-chasing no-win no-fee lawyers making it a no-brainer to try to claim, means that insurance costs for schools must be through the roof; and probably stipulate when the place has to be closed due to inclement weather.

So, as much as I'd love to blame the schools & teachers.... I can't, because it's really OUR fault for letting the scumbags get away with claiming compensation for everything & anything.

6" of snow shuts you guys down.

Here in New York state near Lake Ontario they got 52" of snow just over the weekend. A few schools closed but that's all.

What the heck would you guys do if it snowed that much over there? Hibernate till summer?

6" of snow shuts you guys down.

Make that 1"! Sometimes, even the threat of snow is enough to close schools & other public "services"...

Of course, part of the problem is, severe snow is not a common problem over here; and in places where it is frequent (think: Scotland, North Yorkshire, etc.) they're generally much better prepared for it. The UK media is notoriously "southern centric" - so the only time snow really makes the news is if it's due in or around London - when it's a catastrophe...

I`d just like to make a point in defense. It isn`t the lazy arse teachers who can`t get into work, I was there at 7am shovelling snow!  It is the health and safety brigade that close the school. The school H&S officer makes a decision as to whether it is safe for 1300 kids to be walking around the pathways and also they take into consideration wheather parents will be able to collect students after school! Especially a high school, some of our students live up to 10 miles away which is fair treck. Last thing they want is kids stuck at school with parents not able to get their cars out to collect them. It is also much harder to close a school during the day when kids have been dropped off and that is why they have to make an early decision.

If I`m being honest, they decided at 4pm today that our school is also closed tomorrow! I have to say, I`m not complaining, would you be?  :ddb: :ddb:

State of our country-

I drove in to work 1hour no probs

Sat there while most of my patients canceled or just didnt bother to show up. And drove home 1 hour no problems.

The bit worth thinking is the 4 that did show up on time for their appointments where between 70 and 81 years old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And all of them could ---The rest couldn't.

All H&S officials, lawyers and the rest of the scumbags ought to be forced to doing one winters term driving a heavy good wrecker, think about it these guys never get called out until all else has failed.
That sorts the men out from the boys.........................

Title: Re: Snowing

I often wonder who the H&S will blame if one of the children sent home comes to any harm.

Either on the way home perhaps knocked down by a car loosing control on the snow.
Or perhaps trying to cook some food when parents are out at work thinking their child is safe at school.

Or any number of other scenarios one could think of, remember some of these children sent home are very young without anyone checking that they will be in safe hands.

It's only a matter of time.

Tried not to get involved but can't help it, children are NEVER sent home without contact being made with parents or guardians.
By the way if the roads are so dangerous that children are at risk being sent home then they are clearly at risk coming in to school.

Your first statement is false as our 10yr old turned up at home yesterday just as we were about to go out for the day.

As to your second statement, he was taken to school by his mother and sent home by his own devices.

Not wishing to get involved of course ....

No not heated Chris, just the facts.

We were horrified yesterday as we really were about to go out for the day. In fact we did, flask made along with sandwiches off to photograph the snow.

Except we took the lad with us, 10 min later and I might be telling a different story. We were not impressed.

But deff not a heated discussion.

given the court's predilection to pay the "victim" in such cases (q.v. the McDonalds "hot coffee" case in the US...

This is one of the most often misunderstood cases, and also often used as an example of people getting one over on big corporations.  That couldn't be further from the truth.  This particular McD's had been microwaving the coffee to the point of superheating, reaching temperatures well in excess of boiling, and had been cited for it before by the local health dept.  The woman was subjected to deep tissue 2nd degree burns requiring operations and skin grafts and over 3 months in the hospital.  More than just a mild scalding.  Hospital costs alone amounted to more than $180 thousand.  Yes she was wrong for trying to hold the cup in her lap.  But the store had heated the coffee to the point that it melted the cup designed for hot liquids!  McDonalds tried to recover some of the costs by suing the cup manufacturer, who promptly dropped them as a customer.  Faced with no cups, they dropped the suit (which I know because I worked for that company at the time).  Testing showed that the coffee had been heated to at least 230 degrees equivalent by microwave.

The lawyers got the lions share, ending up with roughly 65% of the money paid out.  If anything is wrong with the system, it the lawyers.  Most politicians start out as lawyers.  Shakespear was right.

Thought I might try to chear this thread up a bit ...  :)

Here are some pictures I took earlier around my place

This is a local dam for a hydro company near to me, one of a few around here and all spectacular in their own right. We live about one photo frame to the right of this picture.

A little closer

And zoomed in some more. It stands about 150ft high and feeds another dam below where the electricity station lives. The lower lake and dam is quite pretty and I thouroughly recomend a cafe that overlooks the lower lake where you can get a darn good cheap English breakfast and a cupper  :ddb: :ddb: :ddb: Tan-y-Grisu if anyone is around this way
One of the Steam Railway stations is also in the same location and runs all year. Well worth a visit.

And to the right of the dam is our little town (center of picture) in the mountains

You can't see our place, but it's below the ziz zag path up the slate waste mound. This is where the workers from the town used to walk to work in the slate quarry for the last 200yrs. It's still producing what is regarded as the finest slate ever mined in the world. And indeed was shipped all over the world.

Here is a view of our place. We are well below road level and you may notice that the garage I built last summer can't be seen

Behind our house it the old market hall, where Lloyd George gave his first ever public speech. Quite a pretty building. And in front of us is an old church, again quite a nice view from the front of our property.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures  :)

I'd like to apologise to AdeV, as my above post came across as a bit snarky.  I assure you that it was not my intent.  I do think that everyone is sue happy these days, and more than a little overboard when it comes to "protecting" us.

So, back to the topic.  I went outside at break today, and measured the snow.  Sitting on a picnic table, where I'm sure wind has removed some of what has fallen, I measured 14.5" in the middle.  My house, less than a 15 minute drive north of here, has had quite a bit less; in the neighborhood of 8".  My friend, who lives in another part of town, again less than 15 minutes drive away, has had over 2 feet in the past few days.  All of this is a result of living SE of Lake Ontario.  It's also not anywhere nearly as scenic as Darren's pics.

Temps have hovered right around the 20 degree mark for the past 10 days or so, dipping into the teens at night.  We're supposed to hit a slightly colder patch in the next couple of days, with highs hitting the single digits and lows going in the negative direction.  I'll take more snow over the excessive cold anytime.

Hey, no worries; I certainly didn't take it as snarky - in fact, it was very informative. You're absolutely right that the case is mis-represented; I certainly thought it was one of those "Americans will sue over anything" type stories; so it's educational to discover that, in fact, this wasn't the case & that genuine harm was done...

See for yourself. It's very airconditioned.

Here's the halfway point looking east toward the main road.

Here's looking toward the west were the house will be built in the open field.

I've got an idea for a tracked snow blower.  I started a web page for it on my web site. That was 4 winters ago. I love to procrastinate in the warmer times of the year.

If your interested the link is VW Powered Snow Blower (http://www.kingstonemodeleng.com/MiscShop/Snowblower/snow.htm)

lol - that is a fair distance to move slate! Is welsh slate a common export/import?
It's found in older houses here in Sydney and has been imported since the 1830s. It's still readily available here - if you've got the money to use it.
The texture is finer than most other imports and there's a wide range of natural colours.

Welsh slate from this town was a major worldwide export.

Can I ask what colour your slate is? Grey, blue, purple ... If it is welsh I can probably tell you exactly which quarry it came from with a few details.

Maybe on the outward voyages, slate was used as ballast which could be sold on arrival.

Tho' that part of Lancashire has now been lost to Cumbria, I'm Lancastrian by birth, so prefer the green Coniston slate, though it isn't quarried any more.

It's a light grey colour once the pollution is washed off. Each tile is approx 300mm wide by 400mm long (as near as I can tell without climbing up on the roof)
The front step is also slate about 40mm thick, same colour as the roof.  House would have been built in early 1900s.
[It's not unusual for me to get cards in the letter box offering roof repairs based on what can be seen from the road. Sometimes these are just a con to get hold of the good slate and replace it with cheaper import (not sure where from), The welsh slates sell for $30 -$40 each. The neighbour a couple of years ago had some (legitimate) repairs done and the slate used is clearly inferior, you can see the layers in it. ]

And to keep this thread on topic, it's still not snowing here   ::) [37 degrees C]

Has the grey got some white or green patches or spots. Or is is a flat even colour?

BTW, Layers or banding is not an indication of quality, but it can really help to identify the quarry and thus the quality.
I'm talking of banding in relation to slate colours here, not impurities such as iron or calcium which is greatly inferior as it washes out with the rain causing the slate to fail early. Very early in some cases.

It's very cold here and the snow is not melting, more snowfall predicted ....

Today it was pleasant -15C, and nice fresh snowy wind. And statistical experts tell it's colder than usually at this time of year .

What do they know. Back in 1987, be it january or february, temperature was -37C. For some strange reason, that kind of temperature makes you run move rather fast, at least outdoors.

It was a great ay, but here in Sale it went overcast at 5pm. Still, I got some of the first lawnmowing done in the sunshine. Can anyone recommend a wheeled replacement for my ancient electric Flymo hover mower? It doesn't hover too well over my thicker moss, ripping up great chunks of it and leaving crop circles in its wake. I'm nor fussed about stripes.
