Title: Tramming the X2 mill
Post by: tumutbound on December 14, 2009, 10:20:09 PM
After having my X2 mill for a few months, I decided to move it on to a stainless steel trolley I had. As I'd never properly trammed the mill, I though it a good learning opportunity to do it after the move.
No problems getting it all apart, lot's of howtos available. I took the column off and aligned following instructions on HMEM http://homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=6007.0 (http://homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=6007.0). Took a while but got it pretty close.

Next step, reassemble the mill and tram X and Y.
No matter what I did, I could not get the column setup so the X setting was constant. After a frustrating couple of hours, decided to give it a break and put some oil on the bits that needed it. It was then that I found I hadn't done up the gib adjusters when I refitted the mill head. :bang:
Needless to say, it's a lot easier to adjust now.

I would have posted this in the 'Stupid Newbie' forum but couldn't find it.

My mistake too......     Though I didn`t mention it at the time!  ::)

Three pics up from the bottom of the page........      http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=808.0

After tightening the gibs, I quietly removed the piece of alloy, and the Y reading returned to .001"!

Not really a "Stupid Newbie"...... I`ve only been machining for 52 years......
