Someone mentioned somewhere on here that the Monarc 10ee had valves in it,
I thought they were kidding, seems not ...

There is an opportunity for you Darren, get all those old valves you have saved away and advertise them on EBay as "MAY be suitable for Monarc 10EE"

They are probably just diodes?
The 10ee used a mains motor to turn a generator to make DC to run the lathe .... seems an odd way to do things but I guess a DC motor is the smoothest and can be easily controlled for speed. It would also allow many types of mains voltages to be used.
I'm guessing of course and someone will no doubt chime in ..... :) :)

I think those tall valves are thyratrons (controlled rectifiers) so I guess they were the switching components of a PWM circuit, but I do not know. :coffee:

I believe you are correct sir.

Those tubes are part of the Monarch 10EE drive system that replaced the Ward-Leonard system. The term they used was WIAD, which stands for "works in a drawer". As I understand it, the WIAD drive is just an electronic version of the electromechanical WL system. The WIAD drive was subsequently replaced by a solid state system, and eventually by a VFD drive.

Valves or no... the 10EE is my all time favorite looking lathe.
