Colin,
Almost all tipped tools already have the correct feed angle built into them, so they should be fed square in, either from the side (normal) or nose on.
Looking at the top row from left to right, LH cutting tool, for cutting left to right, RH facing tool, this is your normally used one, for facing off on the LH side, profile tool, next, no idea, but if it is a 60 deg angle, then maybe a threading tool, RH cutting tool, the one you will use the most, for cutting right to left, LH facing tool, for facing on the RH side, and lastly a boring tool.

Just to add the bottom one looks like an insert parting tool, you'll be glad you have this one .....

Colin,
You might find This (http://www.metalworking.com/tutorials/ARMY-TC-9-524/ch7.pdf) useful, have a look at Fig: 7-5 It's probably worth saving a copy of the whole document.
and Chronos (http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/Chronos_Catalogue_Glanze_Indexable_Lathe_Tools_77.html), click on the pictures of the set as well

thanks for the replies
i understand index tools a bit better thanks to your information
ive also ordered a diamond tool holder Tangential type while i learn grinding angles
all i need then is a larger index type parting tool
and i should be sorted for most things
just go to learn what replacement tips for them seem to be 1000s of different types
thanks for your replies no doubt i will have a lot more questions to ask
thanks colin

Dave, page 7 in your link to what I think is the US Army training manual gives me the courage to mention something. I always thought that, as stated in the link and in my few books, RH tools are for cutting from right to left, towards the chuck. But John Bogs' labelling of Colin's set has it the other way round.
It's only a matter of names, not of function, but I'm confused  . That said, it doesn't take much to confuse me!

My fault Andy, I had them the wrong way around.
I will go now and put right my misinformation.
