Post by: chuck foster on September 30, 2009, 08:32:58 PM
heres a mod i did to my south bend lathe.
now i did this cause my shop is very small and the flat belt drive takes up allot of room.

i will let the pictures tell the story.

John

Took me a couple of minutes of looking at it before I figured the modification out. Actually it was the text that finally let the secret out. Something about taking up a lot of room? Looks like you made a right fine job of it John.

cheers

i guess i should have explained what i did, i just thought everyone new how a south bend was set up

the belt drive was set up horizontal and it stuck out behind the headstock like this

and by moving it straight over top of the headstock i was able to move the whole lathe about 6 or 8 inches closer to the wall.

Nice!   I just filled in the space with a couple 2x4s, but I needed somewhere to put my collet rack anyway.  :dremel:  Great little mod for the shop space challenged.
