Title: The Country Comes to Town (Warning - lots of pics)
Post by: spuddevans on September 19, 2009, 11:21:17 AM
Every year in September in our town ( Portadown ) for the last 7-8 years they shut off the town centre on a saturday, and there are loads of market stalls and displays of country life from years gone by, loads of classic cars, old tractors, stationary engines, farmyard animals and rare breeds.

We ( my better half and me ) went down this morning before it got too busy, and despite the light rain I managed to get a few pics of some of the things being displayed.

I dont know much about most of these varied subjects, but I thought some of you all may enjoy looking.

This little steam truck was zipping around the town centre at quite a speed, I managed to get a shot when the driver stopped to talk to someone.

This guy had built several "Scenes" that were motorised to give some movement.

This was one of the many static engines, this one powered a little water pump.

Another tractor, there must have been about 30-40 different old tractors in total.

This was a great display, unfortunately I just missed the owner, his wife was there but she didnt know much about it apart from that he didnt build the models, he just collects them and displays them. They were all working, powered by a compressor sitting in front of the car.

The local RC model racing club had a stand and had this car uncovered. I was fascinated to see the little calipers and brake discs.

This was a sight I've never seen before, 3 steam traction engines coming through the traffic lights with rather a long tailback behind them!!!

There was a number of bikes, both really old and newer.

Like I said, this is only a small sample of the things on display, and at the end of the day they have a parade around the town, they get all the old cars, tractors, traction engines and lorries in a convoy. It is a grand day out, it has been getting bigger every year with more and more people coming. We managed to get around this morning before it got too busy, it'll be hectic this afternoon.

Thanks for posting Tim, I especially liked the traction engines, a scaled version is certainly something I want to build one day soon...

Nice photos Tim, I wish I had been there!

A couple of things I found interesting, the pink tractor is a presume a Fordson Dexter?  And the other tractor suprised me as I believe that is a North America market Ford equivalent of the Fergie T35?

I see a couple of the traction engines are running on their original steel wheels,  as far as I know that would be a "no no" around here and every one I have seen in recent years has had some sort of sold rubber tyre fitted.

I wish I could tell you, but I know next to nothing about tractors, and there wasnt any owners standing around to ask either  The non-pink tractor did have an american number plate on it though.

Yea, the green traction engine was on steel wheels,  it shook the ground as it passed me, it sounded like it was about to shake itself to bits!! It was running at full speed, about 5 Mph !!!
