Title: can I have videos in my posts
Post by: Bridie on April 20, 2023, 02:15:40 PM
Hi all

I tried to post a video in the videos section demonstrating  5c collet attachment that I thought would be interesting.
Can I do this as an attachment from my pc or does it have to be a youtube link?

38 views and nobody wants to answer. This forum is not for me I think.

Bridie,

I was one of the 38 but didn't know the answer. I suspect others may be the same.

It looks like allowed file types are: doc, gif, jpg, mpg, pdf, png, txt, zip, pps, jpeg

If you can't create an mpg then I suspect that you need to upload your video to Youtube and then insert between {youtube][/youtube} (use all square brackets!)

Phil.

Like Phil I was one of your 38 readers but like Phil couldn’t answer your question so there seemed little point in replying!

I have only ever posted videos on this (and other) forums by using the means that you already have alluded to - the YouTube link.

Welcome to the forum, I’m sorry that you seem to think you’ve been ignored, this forum has many very helpful members and I would encourage you to stick around a bit longer before making judgments.

Thanks for your answers. I misread somewhere that posting Youtube stuff was like promoting yourself and not allowed. Obviously I got that completely wrong. I do have a Youtube engineering based channel so will it be ok to post from that?

Bridie,

After posting I found that I had posted an MP4 from my Google Drive as an attachment and it works.

To post a Youtube video use the button which looks like a play button and paste your YouTube link in the middle.

What IS banned is down right spam & advertising just promoting the selling of products or services and making no contribution to the forum discussion process.

Post away with your videos ! Fear not if the moderators feel that they are inappropriate they will be removed anyway :)

(PS where abouts in Bedford are you? I lived on Kimbolton Road for quite a few years)

Sorry for the delay.

I have to look, but I think I have a minimum post count before posting links? or maybe that is PMs. Do that to cut down on spam. Let me check for you.

Youtube should work

Minimum 5 posts to send messages. try posting the link, if it fails, we will help.

From my experience on a lot of forums, most don’t allow direct video uploads because of storage and bandwidth limits. Usually they expect a YouTube (or similar) link embedded in the post, and attachments are limited to images or small files. Also, don’t take the lack of replies personally—some sections are quiet, and mods or regulars may only check in occasionally.

If your video format is large or not widely supported, converting it first can help before uploading elsewhere. I’ve used guides like https://www.movavi.com/learning-portal/mkv-editors.html to quickly trim or convert clips. It’s useful when you need a smaller, more compatible file before sharing a link.

Rester, this was a two year old thread.

Not any more it's not

In fairness - the last post date isn't exactly "In yer face" with SMF - I didn't notice it was 2 years ago for example, and ffs I'm an admin on 2 SMF forums, so I should know better!

Ade, we're drowning in bot new user requests -- I can't handle them any more.

Can you not get a good 9mm or some thing to sort them out :D
PS: AdeV, Tony STILL only has the rear bodywork to Paint and the Ford40 will be finished.
Been that way for 3 years...Motor sounds ace. you need to get down here and see it.

I can't help you here - I don't have the permissions - but try putting a block on any IPs from Singapore: Most of the bots seem to be in data centres there these days. Other countries which are problematic - China obviously, also Brazil to a slightly lesser extent.  But Singapore is likely your culprit. I've blocked them from MEM & LEF using iptables rules & just blocking out giant ranges of IP addresses. Sadly, that does cut a few legitimate users off, but it also keeps the server afloat.

The GT40? COOL!

Where's he based? I'd love to pop down & see it, even if it's not finished, I bet the old man would be interested too.

I never kept his contact details unfortunately.

Thanks Ade but I don't have the permissions either. Just a mod.
