Title: Anybody know what these are for.
Post by: JD on October 21, 2015, 06:14:08 PM
These two (I believe to be screw drivers) turned up in a box of tools donated to my local Mens Shed.
Any ideas.

The plastic handled one is for gripping slotted screw heads. Insert the blade in the slot then push forward the sleeve and the driver will grip the slot. The two halves of the blade are wedge shaped in section so when they slide over each other the blade changes width.

They're especially useful when you're trying to start a screw in an inaccessible place.

BTW. You're pictures are too big - 800 x 600 is plenty big enough.

Phil.

They're for holding slotted screws when you're trying to get them into a difficult to reach place. Had a few smaller ones in my toolkit when I first started computer maintenance back in the 80s. As the slider is slid down the shaft, the ends close together and expand into the slot. They're very effective.

philf, thanks for that we thought they were a (one size fits all) multi purpose screwdriver.
Sorry about picture size finger trouble while editing.

Sea .dog we do get some really old and odd tools donated to us, we never throw anything away unless it completely knackered.

Yup, still got some Quick-Wedge screw starters and still use them.

In fact, replaced one of mine about a year ago from here:

Sea.dog old habits die hard
All the tools we get donated are unfortunately from widowers who are clearing out workshops and sheds.
Latest is a wooden tool box from a long time served cabinet maker.
First he made his own tool box (a master piece in its own wright) then all his molding planes, set squares, rules, every thing all still in perfect condition.
So on the back of these donations we have started a small museum for all the odd, old, and unusual tools.
May old habits continue.

Dave thanks for the link, if it aint broke don't fix it, a brilliant idea.
Gents, thanks for all you replies happy modding
John

It's pity that there's often no-one to inherit these tools and love them for what they are.  :(

Sea.dog, I among our 100+ membership (minimum age 65) we have all walks of life with a few who use these tools in anger.
We help out in the local community on all sorts of projects so these tools are still useful in there old age.
