Hi guys, a bit of help here please.
I just got a 3-4" micrometer on fleabay for £6 + p+p.
its a german make, FEINMESSZEUGFABRIK.
it looks to be in excellent condition, see pic

however, when I test it using the 3" standard I'm half a thou out and I can't figure out how to adjust the darn thing.
the only adjustment I can see is to take up wear in the thread.
I googled adjustments and all I see is turning the barrel using the spanner in a hole in the barrel.
guess what, this hasn't got a hole.
on the inside of the barrel there s a collar with two holes,

is this an adjustment or does it just hold the whole shooting match together, I don't want to mess with it until I know what I am doing.
has anybody got any ideas.
cheers
Roy.

There should be a hole in the barrel for the included spanner to fit into. The barrel can be turned independent of the spindle.

As I have already stated in the original post " the barrel has NOT got a hole in it"

Roy,
I've never come across a micrometer without a hole for adjustment. (I have seen them without on seperate micrometer heads.)
If it hasn't got a hole you might stand a chance of removing the thimble from the spindle (usually the thimble is on a taper and is held to the spindle by the ratchet mechanism) and putting it back on in the right place.
There might be a clue to your problem in the name of the manufacturer:
To misquote Oliver Hardy it's another "Fein Mess"
Cheers.
Phil.

The spanner supplied is for adjusting it so...
Is there a cover over the barrel adjusting hole (does the knurlled cap unscrew?)

HA I've sussed it :)
unscrewing the small knob on the end of the spindle reveals that the anvil rod( for want of a better name) is held in place with a tapered sleeve and with the taper loose the barrel with the calibrations rotates on the spindle.

the spanner is just for adjusting the wear in the thread.
I hope this helps someone else with this make of mic.

I have a Starrett zero to one inch micrometer which uses the same method of adjustment adjustment.
