Very impressed with the home brew crystal :)
New watch crystals are available; they're not too expensive, but may need some adjustment to fit a DTI

I made some by cutting a flat disc slightly bigger than the bezel hole, and pressing them in at the centre to force them into a dome shape.

After 4 years of use the 1" DI I use on my mini lathe has developed a cracked crystal ( don't know how that could possibly happen, lol) this is just what I needed.

Thanks Bob,I have a dti with a cracked crystal too. And now that you have shown me how to repair it, I will do so.
Jim

Nice repair.
I was given a intrepid test indicator a few years ago. It was missing the lense. I did not have any plastic stock, so I took a small plastic box for the donor material and turn the disc to size and then use a very small amount of glue to keep it fixed. I sure wish I had seen your lense bending technique before that was a very slick idea. It make it look original. Mine looks like it been repaired.
Take for posting!

Wouldnt have thought about doing that Bob. Well done looks great. have to look at mine now and have a go myself, how thick was the acrylic?

For some reason I missed this one. Now that I have found it I can't pass by without saying how clever you are to fix it up better than new at little cost. You always seem to come up with a way to fix something that most of us would pass by. Thanks for sharing that with us.
Cheers

Don has also just brought this to my attention.
Just amazing - I never even considered a replacement crystal could be hand made!!!

Looks good,
Rich

ooo that wood be teling no WH smiths do them ther transfer letering all you do is rub the leter on by the use of a pencel then you can varnish over the top you can use car lacer but this is best sprade on in light cotes leev etch cote to dry well befor aplaying a nuther cote
-
Thanks for the 'how to' Bob,
I'd been quoted £36 for a new glass which i thought was really good since that also included shipping the dti to and from America but i then saw your post and thought i'd try your method first...It worked a treat....Although it took a few attempts to make a piece without it getting to hot then making tiny bubbles in it..your instructions were excellent....
Thankyou, your cleverness...   :mmr: :headbang:

I do like to see a bit of ingenuity, a nice DTI brought back to life with skill and an odd bit of plastic. Nice box.
Well Done David
