Hi Guys,
Hope you can help me and the rugby club. Our irrigation system uses 2" gate valves ( 6 off), trouble is that the handles are made of Mazac this disintegrate if left wet (which happens as they are in chambers 2' under the rugby ptches). At ached is a photo of a remaining handle.
The square hole is tapered, small is about 7.65mm (Nato std round!!) to 9 mm square. It is stamped "W7"
So far the only source I've found is to buy a complete valve for about £60! and just use the handle
I need at least two. Am prepared to pay!
Question to you all: How to broach a tapered square hole :bugeye:
Stay safe and regards to you all
Will, Malahide Rugby Club

Maybe something like this would do the job with a bit of adapting. Certainly nothing to lose at the price.

By one of those brass 3 way key things that have square ends of various sizes. Visit a good plumbers merchants that primarily deals with the trade (i.e not mega store). They should be able to help you out.
Failing that, it is quick and easy make a handle out of brass.
Get a brass bar.
Mill a slot in it (or file it) so it snuggly fits the valve handle.
Now you have a square hole, with one side open.
Solder another piece of brass to the open side, to form the square.

Will how good are you with a needle file?
Turn a suitable brass disk, bore a tapered round hole on the lathe, file the ‘tapered square ‘ with an all square needle file. Not much material to be removed as you are starting with a tapered hole.

Why not remove the handle and make a 5' long wrench like the utility companies use for underground valves?
-
That's the best idea. I was about to suggest the long T- handle too. Avouids having to kneel down and reach in the pits.
You can actually get brass adapter's for the valve spindle to fit the commercial utility company handles. Their taper is about ¾ down to ⅝" square...
Cheers

I am afraid that the valve is at 90 degrees i.e. the 2" male Bauer connector is looking up to the sky!!
I was thinking of the file job but also CNC milling (with a 2mm ball end mill) the tapered square (albeit with 2mm round corners) and hand finishing with a square file.
All a bit of a PITA for a handle that costs about 10 cents in China.
Thanks for the suggestions

Mill a square tapered male end - drill a suitably small hole through a disk of steel - heat the disk to red hot and wack the male taper into it, suitably supporting the back on an anvil like contraption of your choosing.
-
Lightly grease the valve stem. Fill up a 10mm a/f socket with epoxy putty. Push on. Wait until it sets.

Thanks djc, good idea
Here is a photo of the beast:

Gotta love listings like that....
Are you in search of a sturdy, trustworthy tool that can do multiple jobs at once? If yes, look no further! Our professional valve handle must meet you needs. It is one of the best choices for you.
I wonder what other jobs it does whilst being a valve handle....?
- Flat bottom design, not easy to cause sundries deposition, so that the fluid is unobstructed
Absolutely - the last thing you need is your sundries depositioning.... ouch!

The seller of my bandsaw noted that quirkily, the fasteners had been replaced by old tap handles..

A handheld Walschaerts Valve Gear would be the perfect solution :)
