I am sure this has been mentioned before but:
Thinking about DROs on a mill!
1: Mill has a Knee and a Quill.
Where is the DRO scale fitted? I assume to the knee as this is the main Z axis milling facility
2: The "Kno Knee" Mill like the X2 and X3. Again where is the DRO fitted? The cut is usually put on by the fine feed on the head i.e Quill
-
I like to use the DRO for fine adjustments (i.e. as kind of a depth stop during drilling, or for fine adjustments when milling), so my Z axis is DRO'ed on the quill.
-
I fitted a dial guage to my quill as it has only 30mm travel just an idea .
-
My mill is fitted with a fine downfeed on the quill but I never use it. I know some folks do but I only ever use the quill for drilling so I fitted a scale for that purpose.

I always use the knee to adjust the Z so that's where I'd put the DRO if it were my mill.
-
Why not put them on quill and vertical knee to a 2 axis readout. X and Y to another 2 axis readout.
If on quill fit it right not off the depth stop as always seen.
You can drill with the knee.
-
You've said this before. It's on the depth stop because its only for drilling, not milling. As I said, I don't move the quill for milling. Using the knee for drilling is slower and more effort than moving the quill, I guess that's why they fitted a drill handle as standard on these mills.

I have it on the quill.
Knee is much too heavy and imprecise

Arbalist, I like the pool ball handle ends ....OZ.

Sorry its still a poor way Arbalist theres always movement in the thread and where its mounted, the easy way out no better than using a ruler with the error pointless.
