Title: Hobbymat BFE65 milling machine. Morse taper stuck in quill.
Post by: braeb123 on October 16, 2015, 01:24:42 PM
Hi, I've just got the morse taper (No.1) stuck in the quill of the milling machine,I've tried the usual way of removing it, by tapping the drawbar, but no luck, so I tried tapping harder with a bigger hammer, still no go. I don't want to damage anything, then tried WD40, taper still refuses to move, so not sure what to try next. Would anyone know what the thread is on the chuck end of the taper, maybe if I knew this I could make some kind of puller that would screw on this thread. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have this kind of situation?

I don't like hitting it with a hammer, ok for plain bearings but will brinnel rolling bearings. Soes it has a boss or thread to mount something to push/pull it out? Idea is to keep al forces within the spindle and not to put any load on bearings.

There has been some threads.

My take on removing drill chuck from taper:

Commonly 3/8" x 24 TPI UNF or may be 1/2" x 20 TPI UNF on larger chucks.

Never met others but they may exist

For mt1 6mm for metric and 1/4" Whit for imperial .

I know it sounds obvious, but when I was a teenager I got a job in a small engineering firm and they had a couple of guys who spent all day trying to drift a morse taper out of a mill spindle. Turns out the drawbar was a basic bit of threaded rod with two locknuts on it and they had un-locked so one of the nuts was still in place holding it tight. Have you checked for that?

braeb, you could try applying heat to the taper socket on the mill that the drill is stuck in.

The success of this depends on how much of the socket is visible and protruding from the quill.

Use a electric hot air/paint stripper gun to apply the heat.....OZ.

Hi, you don`t say whether you have a robust support between the end of the quill and the table. If not, a great deal of the force from your hammer would be lost. Just a thought. Hope you find a solution.
Cheers, Ray.

If it's a chuck wedges work well http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/Catalogue/Chucks/Wedges-Drifts , then a tap on the draw bar .

Thanks for all the replies, I think the wedges could be the way to go, as I  have some angle iron handy. Would have been good to have the milling machine up and running, to mill the taper on wedge, but there's always a way round these things.

Wedges, yes.

I used a pair of MT3 wedges the other day to take the sprocket off the bottom bearing / shaft of the wife's push bike - worked a treat. There is supposed to be a puller that screws into the crank but I didn't have one.

... so those double wedges are usful for many things other than pulling chucks off  :ddb:
