Title: My Covmac Lathe, running at last!
Post by: hermetic on September 23, 2019, 03:00:17 PM
Hi Chaps, here is a short video of my Covmac running at last!! I have just passed a milestone! After several years of walking sadly past my Covmac lathe, stored away in a cramped building, which is now becoming my blacksmiths shop, I have finally got it out, cleaned, and running.  Covmac were made by Coventry Machine Tool Works Ltd, although it seems that most of the ones which are still around in the UK were made either by D&J Tullis, of Kilbowie Ironworks, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Who made laundry machinery or, like mine, By P&C Garnett of Cleckheaton in West Yorkshire, who were makers of textile machinery. Both firms were manufacturing these machines as war work during WW2. After the war, many of these machines were reconditioned, and sold into industry, mine by I&L Berridge Ltd in Leicester, who were industrial knitting machine manufacturers There is a short video of it here, So, anyone else have one?

Thanks chaps! the really interesting thing about this lathe is that on the changwheel cover is a long list of metric pitches it will cut, from .5mm right up to 10mm! so it looks like it was built to cut metric threads, if you have the changewheel set! It is in remarkably pristine condition having been built as war work by P&C Garnett, who made textile machinery and sharpening machines, and after the war, they were reconditioned, mine by IL Berridge of Leicester, who made industrial knitting machines, and sold into industry. I can hardly believe that this machine has done any work to speak of since. I bought it from Andrews motorcycle shop in Scarborough.
