Title: Small furnace build
Post by: ironman on November 02, 2012, 01:38:19 AM
Hi everyone

I made a video about a small furnace build that melts cast iron using propane. This furnace may be useful for some one wanting to melt small amounts for models etc. The ceramic came from off cuts from larger furnace builds and the paint came from Cast metal services in Australia, it is called "Zircoat W" 25 kg pack. Click onto the link to see the video

I have watched the video, and I am well impressed with your filming and design.
Many thanks, I think This is a way to go.

Nice video. Nice casting.

My 20l oil drum A5 furnace is similar, just with Anon's hot face over the Kaowool.

How long did it take to get the iron to melt, and how long did you keep super -heating before pouring?

Just the size I was thinking of. Thanks for sharing.

Iron starts to melt in five minutes and after the last iron is added I give it ten minutes to make sure the iron is hot enough to pour.

Wow, that is excellent insulation.

Mine also has 2" of Kaowool, but with the A5 crucible took nearly an hour before the iron melted. I scaled the burner down from 3/4" to 1/2" as I couldn't find 3/4 pipe fittings here. Doesn't really matter with Aluminium as a I can melt an A5 crucible from cold in about 15 minutes, but was probably not ideal for the times I want to melt Iron.

Is your burner only 1/2" dia? Mine is about 1 3/8" dia.

Yep

Yep. 1/2". Now I can see how it takes me an hour to melt an A5 pot of iron, and you can do it in a few minutes.

The large hole is for blower air and the small hole is for propane
