I am facing some pretty big changes in the longer term. Having well and truly entered the ranks of Ye Olde Pharts the income is not what it once was and tired old bones do not cope well with stairs and steep streets so we will be selling our home in Wellington and moving to "The Mainland" (South Island) to my home town of Ashburton (population 16K) http://www.ashburtondistrict.co.nz/ (http://www.ashburtondistrict.co.nz/).
A considerable down grade in housing will release enough capital to keep bread and water on the table for some time and allow for some shed time.
Ashburton is a town of generous sized residential secitons but many sections have been sub-divided the result being that the choices are old houses with plenty of space or newer houses with less space. The challenge will be to find an acceptable place with either existing workshop space or space to build. If we can keep our expectactions down to something like this one....

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=245749072 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=245749072)
... we will have about the same disposable cash flow as we have how which would be nice.
Other choices are places like this one...

...look at all that space to build on to the back to the triple garage!
Or by stretching the budget a little, this one...

...which has four car garaging and still appears to have enough room to park the odd derilect Vauxhall! (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-me-property/Residential-property/Houses-for-sale/auction-247590312.htm[/url)

There are some nice looking homes down there.
Looks like the last pic you show there is a guy into restoring cars. Pic in the upper right shows a blue tarp over, what I assume, is an old car. Probably not the kind of niegbor you'd want. would probably keep bugging you to make parts fro him.
Just checked out the prices. Ouch. Didn't know they cost that much down there. I'd probably get close to a 7 figure amount for mine, if I ever get it finished. What the heck are gas prices down there?

They all look nice John. You are very fortunate to have such choices
I notice they all have good sized overhanging roofs, is that for sun shade .... :(

That town is about 44 degrees south, equivalent to about Portugal, so yes they are sun shades.

I guess that is on the property that is for sale so I expect that will be going with them. It is a Vauxhall from about 1948.

Houses in that town are a lot cheaper than were we are now. I do not think you can easily make a direct comparison and dont forget those are NZ dollars (though yours has been so wonky lately they may soon be the same.) Petrol is expensive, about NZ$1.65 per litre.
-
Petrol is expensive, about NZ$1.65 per litre.
That comes to $6.9741 per US gallon. And we complain when gas hits $3.00 a gallon.
Good luck in finding a new workshop. The house is secondary.
Bernd
-
That's still cheap, try buying it here

Bernd, your calculator might need a bit of attention as I think it equates to about US$3.50 per gallon.
NZ is a free market in most comodities** but gasoline is an exception with a rather significant tax on it.
**Instead of sales taxes, duties and tariffs there is a universal 12.5% GST (i.e. VAT).

Quite true Darren!
Oh, the hardships we stoic Brits have to endure :(
At £ 1.05 per litre and £1.00 = $1.66, also 1 gallon Imp. = 1.2 gallons US ...
I make it equivalent to some $6.59 per US Gallon ... and it don't produce any more BHP either ...
Please send food parcels ASAP ...
Will break off now, faint and weak from malnutrition ...

Oh dear Dave, I did not realise it was still so bad over there. Have a look down the back of the sofa and see if you can find 10 quid, take it down to NZ House and they will give you a ticket for a ship to bring you here to a life of ease and drunken gluttony.
-
John
Too late .. Burnt the sofa to cook a morsel of roadkill I found ....
BTW very nearly did emigrate to NZ in (1983 I think, was certainly the year after really destructive fires in Tasmania), did the immigration thing at NZ House in London. Medical OK, enough funds etc. ... but never went. (LMF ??) Was put off the idea 'cos a mate had been there for a year or so, sed NZ folk were a bunch of parochial sods, never talked to him etc. etc. Awful place. He returned to UK, decided UK was even worse, went back to NZ, and AFAIK is still there ??
Dunno what would have happened if I had gone?
Well, that episode plus some other uncertainties caused me to abandon the idea.

Never mind, if you have a criminal record go to Australia House and they will take you for free! :)

Oh dear Dave, I did not realise it was still so bad over there.
Dave's post was obviously based on this mornings price, I filled up this afternoon and it was £1.09 per litre = $6.84 per US Gallon ........ :bugeye: .......... by the weekend after next we could all be living in caves :smart:

I can trump that, £1.18/litre at Texaco in Marlborough this afternoon but that may be something to to with the fact that there is no where else to fill up within 20 miles.
I better get one of my kidneys up for sale soon to fund the fuel costs to get to Harrogate next year.
-
Dave,
Try this, it might leave you enough at the end of the week to buy a couple of rounds of stale bread. Those dogs of yours must be looking very tasty by now. Real hot dogs!!

You would be living in a cave if you came here anyway, this is a typical NZ housing estate, nice eh?

We still got diesel @ £1.04 nearby ... :D :D I'm thinking of going into the export business to TSq :)
Not my dog. Was looking after it for a mate on holiday. Amusing little bugger, great fun. .. wonder what it tastes like tho ... Hmmm ..

I don't have a criminal record .. ( you should not try to extrapolate that statement to mean I have committed no crime!!) the market in those has been cornered by a certain bunch of parasites in Westminster. Now, if we could export that bunch of Toerags to OZ, I suspect our situation would improve no end ...

Nah! They send you to Christmas Island or Anchor you off of Indonesia now.

Quite a few of our people move to OZ each year, it is a sort of ANZAC cooperative thing and enhances the average IQ of both countries.

Those are the ones without criminal records...

£1.04.50/ltr here, quite a variation across the UK ...

We are just back from a short expedition to the Mainland to look at houses. That brick one, the first photo in the opening post turned out to be not so attractive and it has absolutely no land around the house, scratch that one, scratch a few other too for one reason or another.
I think we will be having a new house built which means I get to choose the size of my 'shop. :ddb: After initial dreams of a huge barn I have decided that big just means a bigger mess and that I should be content with a size that will always be tidy, 6 x 4 metres would seem adequate. Any thoughts on this?
I do need a bit of space around the house as my Lego train set occupies a 20' shipping container and I must find a place for that which is not in the face of neighbourhood busybodies.
-
My Garage is about that size, kept it small to stay away from planning issues/regulations. Not that I've built it sub standard, it's just when you go much bigger the authorities get involved and the cost (their costs) skyrocket.
Given the choice I would have built it half the size again.
eg, with machines down each side you can just squeeze my car in, well until the new lathe that is.
A touch wider would have made the world of difference. Say 5 or 6m and 8m long.
I will sneak in an extension at the back later :dremel:
-
I dont intend to park the car in mine Darren, there will be a double garage for that as I am hoping my wife and I will both be able to drive for a decade or more yet. I do have a motor cycle to accommodate and I hope there is room for a safe welding area.
-
I don't park in mine John, but I do like to work out of the rain when needed.
If you are to have a double garage as well then your size should be fine ..... consider yourself spoilt :)
-
Yes Darren, I really am spoilt! :D
My 'best' machines are right now at the back of the garage I use and I do not like it too much as I think parking hot, wet vehicles releases a lot of moisture into the air which I am sure is not good for my Sally Shaper or the un-named lathe.

Yup. Here's the begining of my shop.
It sits on six acers of land and this was back in 1997. Now see what happened after 12 years of "stuff" following me home. We're looking at about 2300 square foot basement.

I should have built only a small shop. Also that length of time I decided I didn't want to fill all that space with a model railroad. So be careful when wanting a bigger space because your right, it's a bigger mess and much harder to clean up.

Yes, but in the mean time it's soooooo muuuuch fuuuun!
Cheers

I built a 24' X 30' shop and, if I had it to do over, it would be 40' X 60' and two stories.
-
Don,
Yeah, your right so much fun untill you can't find that tool you just laid down and spend hours looking for it only to find you left it right were you last used it.
Tinkerer,
First story for metal working, second for wood working.

Progress on the eventual move is a bit slow. We have concluded that a new house will be required as the available old ones all leave something to be desired.
Of course a new house also means a new 'shop and this is what I am looking at right now...
(http://www.totalspan.co.nz/pics/heritage.jpg) One of the side bays will be the workshop and there will be a mezzanine in the centre bay for the Lego trains. They are steel frame kitsets 7 x 11 metres overall.
The shop space will be snug, about 3.5 x 7 metres but it will open into the adjacent garage space if I am working on a vehicle or building some incredible machine! :coffee:
-
That'll be one nice looking shop. :bugeye:
