Hi
I have just acuired a boxford AUD mark 2 long bed lathe
It was stripped down in to its main parts so i put all i could carry in the back of my car .
I will have to wait untill next week end to get thew bed and stand.
It all seems in good concition (the odd nut and bolt ar missing as it has been stripped for 10 years)
The machine is imperial (i like thous).
It is 3 phase so i will be needing advice on inverters , i converted my bantam to single phase and regret doing so.

The lathe however is going to be nice. The parts you have so far look to be decent quality.
BTW... What is that in the background of the second to the last picture? Have I seen it before? Looks like a cylinder...

I noticed that too, Eric ... not a cylinder, but two in a Vee Twin I think ...
Somewhat like a fairly large design by John Haining, but not sure ..

I have a Boxford Model A and I`ve just started to strip mine down and clean it up as it doesn`t seem to have been done in 50 years. Looks at your photos, mine looks identical! Here my thread: http://madmodder.net/index.php?topic=1231.0
It seems a great lathe. Mine was single phase but I`ve managed to source a Brooke Crompton 3 Phase motor which is a direct replacement and have just purchased a 1hp inverter and pendant off Gavin on homeworkshop. He seems to have a lot of inverters for sale and considering they are ready to go and come with a pendant I think the prices are very reasonable. They don`t go for much less on ebay auctions (more at Buy Now) and most of the time they are listed as not working. Does your threee phase motor say that it is 230v and can be wired Delta?

By the way, have you thought how your going to tighten the bolts on the headstock when you fit it to the bed??? You can`t get a spanner in there for enough leverage for a turn!! I can`t get mine off but heard on the yahoo boxford groups that you can get one of those cheap bike spanners and bend it! :S

I bought a 1 hp inverter drive from drives direct (got a good deal on a ebay auction)
The brook crompton motor was already wired in delta 220 volt mode

I wired it all up this morning after a bit play i read the set up instructions it works great of the remote pot & reverse switch.
I cant wait to get the cabinet painted so i can assemble the lathe .
I sold my bantam to fund this so now i have no lathe , it is a very strange feeling (a bit like having no cigaretts) :doh: :doh: :doh: :doh: :doh:

Hi doubleboost. I was wondering if you could help me. I`ve got the Boxford Model A but it seems that the cross slide and compound slide, infact the hole of the saddle looks the same. I`m having problems with a grinding feeling during travel of the slides and also the cross slide has movement and a small gap of about 1mm appears between the graduated dial and the handle. I have been told that both slides run on a thrust bearing but when I dismantled mine there was no bearing that I could see unless I couldn`t tell that is what it was. Can you tell me, was there any bearings in your cross and compound slides? I can`t seem to find any exploded diagram of how the axis should be assembled so don`t know if it is incorrect or just worn. Someone has placed a washer on the cross slide to take up the slack so clearly that isn`t as it should be!
Any info on how yours went together would be great.

I took both the slides apart they should have a thrust bearing in them it is a plastic spacer with ball bearings set in .
The washers these run on wear and give the gritty feel you describe .
I simply reversed the washers on mine but they are no silky smooth by any means

Sorry to be a pain but where abouts exactly should these thrust bearings be?
I can`t get down to the lathe right this second, but from memory: I can remove the handle, then the graduated dial splits in two with a recess in one side that allows the two to fit together, then your into the casting of the main axis/scross slide itself - of course with the leadscrew threading through the middle of all this. I`m just trying to understand where this thrust bearing sits. I take it there must be a recess for it?

When you remove the handle and graduated wheel there will be a steel washer the bearing is behind this , there is also one on the inside .
It is the washers that wear and give the gritty feel

Ok cheers, I have just taken mine apart again and this part is
missing and I can't see a steel washer. I can remove the handle and the graduated dial is I two parts. I can't afford a bearing from boxford so I'll have to orderone from arc euro. Should the thrust bearing be placed behind the graduated dial. Problem is, the thrust bearings by arc euro are not bearings mounted in plastic but seem from the picture to be encased in metal surround. I think this will still be better than using a standard washer to take up the slack like currently present, it's just where to fit it.

I've just noticed your queries. I used to have the spares list for a Boxford, but it went for a ball o' chalk when my HDD died. However, as I recall, there should be two thrust bearings, one to work in each direction. I think the designation will be FT3/8 eg ebay #190352728918 and 'a bearing' comprises two hardened thrust washers separated by a ring of caged balls. FT is a light series ball-thrust bearing, 3/8 is the nominal shaft diameter.
I'm struggling to remember the exact mounting details, but I am pretty sure there is one bearing inside the dial and one at the other end of the 'stem' that mounts the feedscrew to the carriage. I have a different Southbend copy and it retains the original plain bearing arrangement so I can't go and look.

Got the lathe assembled (really easy to work on just like a mechano set ) :D :D :D :D
The inverter worked fine but the lathe was noisy .
I replaced the counter shaft bearings but still it was not rite,
Only one thing for it strip the headstock

The internals were very good but the back bearing was dry
The grease hole to this bearing was blocked (with a broken drill) i think it left the factory this way
I drilled a new hole to supply grease to the bearing

Once cleaned up and reassembled it sounds like a different machine :D :D :) :) :)
