Title: 1886 Benz

This is my winter project. I got started on it about 3 months ago and cranked it up the first time last night and what a thrill it was. It's a replica of a 1886 Benz motor wagon power unit. I still need to build the carb. and cooling tank. Was it made from casting or bar stock, either way great job.

Wow, Tom, what a thrill to watch that run! I may have to build a smaller, compressed air version of that engine. I really love the flywheel!

Thanks Guys. STW no castings were used just a lot of welding and grinding, you can see a build log over at HMEM. Chuck go for it and post a build log I would love to see it. When I get it running better I will post another video. Tom

that is one very nice engine, it has a fair kick to it when it fire's. you must have very good compression.

Now the engine, yeah, I'd say it's got darn nice compression.
Very nice Tom. Going have to check out your build over on HMEM now.

Thanks it has less then 3 to 1 compression but it has a 6 inch stroke in the video above I have the timing at about 30* atdc. here is a video of the first start at tdc I am really surprised how well the slide valve seals but its slow to open and close . Tom,
I can now understand why those old auto's they showed bounced around so much when they were idling. :D
Looks like you need to bolt that table down so the motor doesn't dance all over the place too.

I took Bernd's advice and bolted her down before she ran away. :thumbup: Built a mixer and coolent tank and got it running a little better . Thanks guys. Stew I had planed on building the rear wheels but I found these in my brothers front yard I have some rubber tire orderd for them. I plan on building the front wheel. Geroge thank for being kind but its nothing compaird to what you do. Tom

I was at the Benz dealer the other day getting a part for my car. While I was standing at the parts counter I noticed a picture of the car you are building. The title was something along the lines of "if cars had DNA..."
Very cool because I recognized the car as the one you are building.
