Title: Hello from darkest Lincolnshire
Post by: Spen50 on August 06, 2009, 11:06:12 AM
Hi folks

I'm a vocational trainer, teaching engineering skills to challenging youngsters, no I'm not mad but it certainly helps some times.
Not been a turner for long, but I find it fun and it helps to keep the grey cells ticking over.
But I'm getting the hang of it, here's a few things I've made so far:

The first is a pair of handle bar ends, for my bike. And the second is a setting tool so that I can set my tool height without too much messing about.

Hey there Spen!

Welcome to the collective :borg: and not that it matters, but we're all mad here...

Nice bar ends! What do the go on?

Could you explain the 2nd tool a little for us? Maybe show how it works?

Also, being a votech teacher (right on! we need more of you guys  :headbang: ) What exactly do you teach? Engineering skills... is kinda of a broad topic.

Hi Eric

The bar ends were an experiment and the first things I made, designed to fit on any on bike with with 7/8" bars.
The tool is to enable me to set my tool height without disturbing the tail stock. The idea is that you adjust the gauge so that it's height is the same as the lathe centre.  So that when I change a tool all I have to do is check the tool height against my gauge.

My background is avionics (ex RAF) but over the years I've picked up some other skills while restoring bikes, cars and various household appliances that my wife and kids break.
My teaching involves woodwork, metalwork (including turning) and motor mechanics.

Spen,

Welcome.

It is nice to know that we have people like yourself trying to pass on skills. I am a great believer in trying to communicate what you know to other people. We only have one lifetime, so just spend a bit of it passing on the information you have in yourself.

I too am an ex RAF man, rigger by trade. Jack of all afterwards.

Spen... gonna yank on your leg a little...  What kinda bike did you make the barends for? I am a bike nut... so I would be very interested in hearing about what you have. Go in to the powersports section and look for my CF kickstand i build.

Bikes, Ok.
I have a: 1956 Velocette LE mk2, 1975 Triumph 750 Bonnie (both under going long term restoration), 1989 Honda CG125 (that I use for work and what the bar ends were made for), 1989 Harley Electra Glide Sport (my big baby) and a Suzuki Intruder trike (that's my wife's but thanks to my eldest son smashing it up it's awaiting the touch of my healing hands).

As you all like pics I've added a couple.
