Title: Painting or powdercoating a gear
Post by: Brass_Machine on September 25, 2015, 11:08:00 PM
I am working on this quick project (waaaaay over due). it involves a gear that I either want to paint or powder coat. problem is, this gear has had a hard life in an engine in it's previous life. I believe it was a cam gear. Needless to say, it has been bathed in oil at high temps. I am not sure paint will stick. I saw a blog post where a guy powder coated a set of used brakes... after cleaning them, he heat soaked them in an oven for awhile.

Does this actually work? Recommendations on how I can give this ear some color?

Eric

Iff you get it hot enugh for the oil to burn it is no longer oil , and will clean off without chemicals .

If it is cast iron the oil will have penetrated deeply and will be a problem, however if it is steel, just a good clean with carb cleaner should do it.
