Title: Nickle plating
Post by: Powder Keg on July 29, 2008, 11:33:47 PM
Have any of you done it? I'm thinking of one of Caswells kits. They look fairly straight forward. I'll be posting my results here:o)

It has been awhile, but I will say this its all in the prep as to cleanliness. Also if you have a jewelry supply house in your area check them out as most carry a line of plating supplies.
http://grobetusa.com/ (http://grobetusa.com/) see if they have a franchise's close to you. or one of them on the web.
https://www.micromark.com/ (https://www.micromark.com/) also has small scale kits.

I've got one of Caswells powder coating kits. I think anything they sell is quality stuff. I've seen some people that have used there anodizing kits with great results and they're located close to me.  :D

I suspect I will be trying some of the plating soon myself.

Nickel plating involves some nasty stuff.  We do it here where I work.  Anodizing, yeah, you take precautions with the acids, etc.  But this is a whole 'nuther level of health issues.  I would not recommend it for home/hobby use.

I used to work at a place that did electroless nickel plating as part of the production process.

Basically, it is a matter of just keeping the chemicals warm and it deposits nickel onto the surface of the metal put into it. You could in fact do it on a stove.

Go to any plating business and they should be able to coat your parts in very little time and very cheaply. They should give you the choice of matt or bright finish.

Make sure the surface finish is perfect, as marks will show thru.
