Title: Another New Member
Post by: NickG on January 28, 2009, 05:45:40 PM
Hi all,

Some of you may have seen me on another forum, I have certainly spoken to Bogs and a few others that I've noticed are on here.

I am married with two young boys, eldest is 3 in March and the other is 6 months old. I work as a design engineer for BAE Systems at Birtley (Ex Royal Ordnance Factory) in the North East of England.

I had a kind of bizzare introduction to this forum. A couple of weeks ago, a colleague of mine was showing another some pictures of a 3 1/2" loco on this forum, which to my amasement was the same engine as the one I have (I didn't build mine but bought it to restore, but that's another story which will no doubt pop up on here sometime). Anyway, as we got chatting it turned out that the guy building this engine was also an Engineer working for one of our sister BAE Systems sites in Cheshire. The man in question was Stew (sbwhart), whom I was introduced to by my colleague. Stew has now kindly introduced me to this forum, thanks Stew.

It's a small world!

Nick

Welcome to the collective Nick!  :borg:

It is always neat to hear how people find us since the advertising budget is kind of low.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys,

I started off in this hobby by buying a beam engine in a junk shop which I sold on and made a small profit, then it escalated from there, bit's of wheeling and dealing over the years I ended up with a couple of part finished models and a workshop. This was all before I went to University so as you can imagine, I was a bit of a geek!

I was into traction engines originally (I still like them, just don't think they are realistic as a project to me!) I am a member of a club that is very loco biased but now I set my sights a bit lower and am really interested by small steam, hot air and i.c. engines.

Next projects on my list are a flame gulper, i.c. engine and possibly a beam engine. I also have as I said a 3 1/2" Mable which I didn't build and is in need of restoration / finishing off and a 4 1/2" Wallis & Stevens Simplicity Roller in about the same situation. So it's already been confirmed by Stew that I have  :proj:

Since I rejuvinated myself in this hobby a couple of years ago (I just realised I have a job now and can actually afford some better machines!) I have only made 2 oscillators and a hot air engine, but am quite proud of them as my workmanship has improved with each one and they are my own designs. I found out last night that somebody else has successfully made my simple oscillating engine which was a proud moment! The problem being with a wife and 2 young children I don't get that much time to myself and sometimes a cold garage isn't that appealing!

Anyway, I'm rambling now and am aware that  :worthless: so I will stop! The next topics I post will show some of my small achievements thus far!

Stew, will look forward to seeing you soon!

Nick

Sorry for the late welcome Nick, I get easily sidetracked when I am busy. :med:

All we say is, show us what you got, tell us what you are into, and ask any questions you want (within reason). :headbang:

But a sense of humour is mandatory.
