Title: A steamy weekend
Post by: Scuba1 on September 21, 2011, 06:28:10 PM
I went to the steam rally at Old Warden in Bedfordshire last weekend and it was a by far the the most engines that I have ever seen in one place. I have taken near 200 photos of the large stuff and the many models that were chugging around the place. The air was filled with smoke and coal ash was at times coming down like little snow flakes. Even the music there war made by steam powered old fair ground organs. I even got a few tools for my lathe at some of the stalls selling things there. I still have to sort out a load of pictures, but here is a little teaser for you for now and i'll stick some more in this thread when i have a bit of time.

Hard to believe so much of the world of steam has been preserved.

We'd have that much too if hadn't been for the scrap drive during WWII. At least some of it escaped the scrappers torch.

We went to Henham...held on the same weekend...so THAT'S where all the engines were! :(

My wife was most disgruntled... she lives for Fowler Ploughing Engines and there wasn't even a picture of one.
There was an S7 Superba there last year... :bang:

Here is a pic from the visitors car park

What I thought was a nice touch is, that when one of those old fire breathing things needed water, it was filled up by a steam pump from a restored fire engine. Even the coal was taken round the place on a steam driven flatbed.

Smashing pictures, Michael.

When I last attended the steam fair at Chelford up here in Cheshire, they had a traction engine tug-of-war, which was good fun. That was some years ago, though, and the H & S busybodies or the event's insurers may have barred it since then.

Thank you folks for the kind words. It was a great day out and even without any pulling competitions and such things, you just did not know where to look first as there were steam engines of all shapes and sizes running about all over the place, so if you are at all interested in things that smoke and boil, go there next year, it is well worth it and you can buy cheap bits of material from ally to brass and used lathe tooling etc there in the numerous stalls that folks set up as well. I went home with a few bits and pieces that I did not think I would end up with when I fell out of bed that morning.

:offtopic: The June 24/25 2012 Chelford rally is advertised as being "1000 Engines"  :bugeye: David, so it might be worth a Transpennine trek. I don't suppose they are all full size, though.

When I worked in Wilmslow, I used to see plenty of traction engines chugging past the office window on their way to Chelford.
