Title: Anyone on here have a lathe with whirling capability?
Post by: George Konstantinidis on February 11, 2016, 04:02:56 AM
Hi all,

I am helping my brother get a new product on the market but we are having some difficulty finding machine shops in the UK that have whirling capability. I have tried to 4th axis this on the mill but it takes too long to make even 1 and the parts are too small for the rpm of my KRV2000
We have spoken to some far east guys, some german guys but I would personally prefer to have the parts made in the UK for logistic and of course to support the country we live in.

So any of you have a whirling head on their slantbed lathe or know of someone that does?

A bit like a combination of active cutting as in thread milling, movement along the work in a lathe like a Coventry die head, and the self-balancing you get with thread rollers which helps for slender work.

I dont have one, and am not in the UK, but..
Ask the industrial sales guys who sell whirling tools, for a client of theirs.

Usually super helpful, as it helps their sales..
Just an idea.

Another option, contact the big second hand machinery dealers.
They will know several.

Animation sums it up:

But you can do amazing things with it:

Even cut polygons on a lathe:
