Title: The new shop!

The old shop became too small! Only one thing to do.. Find a new one. So me and my partner in crime (He's a smith and I'm a apprentice machinist) decided that it was the time to terrorize my father into giving up one of his stables. There is a lot of work to be done, first of all removing all that brown stuff the sheeps left there! We're going to lay down some new floor, expand the door, paint the walls and ceiling, put in some new windows, put in the wiring and of course move all the machines! hehe.

It's about 170m2 :D (or 557 square feet)

For the time being it's big enough.... BUT! who knows? There's always another machine that needs a new home!

Well, the stable has great "capability"! It will make a wonderful workshop..... Eventually.....  :thumbup:

170m2 is more like 1800ft2... which looks about right to me. It's a nice space which will serve you well I think  :thumbup: For a while, at least....  :bugeye:

The shaper is Varnamo with 18'' stroke and Bel is an old drillpress that need some fixing! :D

No business plans yet, at the time being it's only for our own projects (and there are plenty!) I can't wait to get started! :D

We've started on the floor! We got a friends, dad to help (he's a bricklayer) so he helped with the first 50m2. (none of us had any clue of how to do it)

Have been watching from the start, moving along nicely,
I see you are mixing it your self.
I remember in my younger years thinking how much I would save if I mixed my own. I bought a pallet and a half of cement and all the sand and aggregate to go with it. There was only 2 of us and we were stuffed for days after it. I will never do that again.

Update!
There is not much progress at the time due to unforeseen projects!


BUT! the floor is nearly done! (only need 2 small areas where there is some plumbing to do first) The walls and ceiling has been washed and we're ready to repair the walls!


The pictures are coming later (currently they are still in the camera and the camera is not with me)

Davo, when I was younger I went to help a friend lay a pad for his garage, he had all the materials and we were ready to start.  Then he pulled out a library book on how to mix concrete! His wife cussed him for being so useless and sent him indoors to look after the children while she and I did the job.  Cunning sod if you ask me! :lol:

Finally a new update! It's starting to look like something! The only things left to do before we can move the machines is to get the 32amp cable up. But before we do that my brother is holding his wedding in the shop.

Well, maybe even after its a functioning shop you could continue with the weddings in & around the shop?  In Britain, probably the most famous wedding venue is the Blacksmith's shop at Gretna Green (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gretna_Green#Marriage)
Maybe in your case you could even CNC a prototype and then lost-wax cast the wedding ring at the same time?   :beer:

Well if only I had the time! hehe. but it wont be the last party in there, currently i'm an apprentice machinist but when I finish that education the party is in the shop surrounded by machines!  :D

wow - what a shop that'll be now - just need to make some chips in there!

and I was interested to see the coolant you've deployed on the Elite grinder - is it one that "reaches the parts others can't" ?  :beer:

Coolant for the machinist is just as important as for the machines! :D

Great shop!, and hand mixing that quantity of concrete is hard work. Even to keep the mixer fed with aggregate is hard going unless there was a machine bucketing it straight into the mixer drum...
The advantage of course to handmixing is you can do it in bits that you can tackle easily, rather than have a lorry drop off 14m3 in one go and have to run round like madmen pulling it round then tamping it. Which in a building that size is equally as exhausting. Disadvantage is variations in shade of concrete with small inconsistencies in the quantities, not a big issue for a workshop but if you are trying to polish it for later it matters.

Memories of trying to power float our 150m3 house downstairs floor to a polished floor finish in one go spring to mind, during which it was at the perfect stage for floating at one end, but by the time the float got to the other end and I'd wrestled the heavy float past all the internal doorways etc, the concrete there had gone off too much and needed wetting down. We ended up tiling it :wack:

Still think I'd pick the phone up and order a wagon's worth though, well done on getting it down so quick  :thumbup:
