Title: Hello from a Colorado Mold Maker

Hello,
My name is Robert but I am usually called just "Bert" hence the Bert2425.
I am a Mold Maker from the Longmont area in Colorado and i found this site when I was looking for some pointers on a difficult setup I had to make to grind an insert. From what I have seen of this site so far there is allot of talent and machining knowledge here and I will be a frequent visitor.

Mold maker eh? That's a talent that will fit in well here. I know I have an interest in mold making... tell us a little more.

There is always someone around to give an answer or at least an opinion. We would be interested in learning some of the tricks and skills that mold makers use. Im working on a machine to polishing the tool marks out of the inside of my alloy mug mold right now.

Help me out here - Is it mold or mould?

The moulds for my cups are just aluminum pipe or round bar that is slightly tapered on the lathe.  Ive got one mould for making the inside of the mug, which I can polish normally and the second mould is a 80cm diameter tube that i need to polish on the inside, this makes the outside of the cup.

A tube is easy to polish round its diameter but if you want to polish straight down in the direction of its length then their is no current machine which can do that.

Hey Ant, when I used to CNC cut moulds for the automotive industry, we would lace cut the cavity with very small step overs like .0005 in 4 diffrent directions, steping down Z axis a little also, almost the same and running the spindle at a high rpm using a small carbide ball nose mill, this would save almost 200 hrs of hand polishing, we would just let the cnc mill run all week end. Dont know if you have a CNC mill but just thought I would mention it to ya.
