I know this topic has had various solutions posted in the past. My method for turning between centres, which I haven't seen covered to date, is:- Use an appropriate socket from a standard socket spanner set. They need to be the type that has 12 splines (designed to accommodate hex and square nuts/bolts). These usually cover sizes up to about an inch or so square. This will of course require a centre bit hole drilling in the tail stock end. Hope this tip helps.

Ooohh...... I like that tip!
Thanks, McB.
Would you like to put a few lines about yourself, in the Introductions Section?

Thanks for your rapid response David. That was my first post on MadModder. Where do I find the 'Introduction Section'?

Just found it David - will write a few words. Thanks for the suggestion.

For rough-holding of square stock in a 3-jaw chuck I use a split collar. I turn a collar from scap ally of which the ID is the same as the square's diagonal distance, wall thickness 3-4mm, then I cut a 2-3mm slit in it and slide it over the square stock. All you have to do is make sure you don't grip the split bit right on the jaw.

I use Er32 collets over 6mm they have 8 slots and are pretty mutch spot on , they just click into the slots and don't move .

Hi McB
That is a very welcome and intuitive introduction, well done that MadModder.

I'm with everyone else on the split collar. I make them up as I go and then put them in a drawer for next time I need one close to that size.
