Title: Robo One Robot
Post by: vanguard29 on April 29, 2011, 07:14:03 AM
This project is a robot for a humanoid robot competition in Japan called Robo One.

At this stage in the build, I've completed most of the lower half of the robot and will shortly be starting work on the upper body.
The legs makes use of a design concept called Parallel Leg Mechanism - which is why there are no motors at the knee joints.

The majority of the parts have been made using a taig lathe and a taig CNC mill.
Unfortunately, I don't have too many photos to post of the build up to now - but here are just a couple showing parts in fabrication:

Servo bracket being worked on:

Mill work on knee component:

This is my first humanoid robot that I'm building from the ground up - so it remains to be seen on how everything will turn out in the end.....

Always happy to field questions!

Powersource and processing power will be onboard.
The current plan is to use Lithium polymer batteries for power.  A Roboard RB-100 will be the onboard controller.
* The RB-100 is basically a small PC designed specifically for robotic applications.

Target weight for this robot is 3kgs.

The servos have a torque rating of 28.5kg-cm and operate from 4V-9V.  These are made by a company in Japan called V-stone with robotics in mind.  One nice thing about these is that unlike your typical hobby servo for RC vehicles, the servo cases have features that make it easy to mount for robots.

Thank you for your concern!  Here in Osaka, we were pretty lucky in that earthquake (and the nuclear powerplant issue) didn't significantly affect food or fuel.  As I understand, there are still problems in the areas directly affected by the quake - but things are slowly returning to normal.

Wow....I can't believe how much time has passed since my last post on this project.....

After a longer than anticipated break, I've started making parts and assembling the upper portion of the robot.

With a lot of work involving thin materials (1-2mm thicknesss aluminum sheets), using double sided flooring tape worked pretty well in holding down parts on the machine.
* thin passes and no coolant!

Hi Vanguard,

Beautiful engineering and super cool.

One thing though -  presuming you are intending on getting it to walk, how are you going to balance this robot? Giros? Or maybe keeping weights of some sort below the centre of gravity?

Kind regards,

Ron.

Looks great, are you working of plans and is there any cnc files avalable for it

Hi Ron,
There are several similar type robots that people have built with and without gyros.  Though this is my first robot from the ground up so I expect to be doing a lot of learning and tweaking as I go.

Hi Peter,
This robot is entirely self designed - and I will confess that there have been some parts that have gone through a few iterations as this project has sometimes been a 'design as you go' process for me.

Unfortunately, a couple months passes too quickly between updates sometimes.....

While not 100% complete - I put together most of the major assemblies - and here is what the robot looks like now.

I still need to work on the arms (one arm is missing a servo) - and he's a bit overweight for his competition class by 30 grams so I need to look at ways to lighten him up.

Really interesting build.

What kind of size is the robot?

That is pretty wild. Do you have any videos of it? My son (he is 4) is asking.

In the process of teaching the robot motions - I found that I may have to re-design some of the components.  The shoulder servos lack the torque necessary for helping Maxwell getup - so will probably be looking at gearing or doubling up servos.

Thank you for the positive comments!  I hope to have some videos of Maxwell in motion in a couple weeks.
