Has anyone got any idea what this is? I've never seen anything like it before!

Great project though... LOL

The guy who owned it called it a 'jigger' - sadly he is now dead  so the thing is a mystery.

The whole thing is cast iron.  The main part is 4’ high and would, I presume be bolted to the 16” x 2’6” base.

The knob on the upright has Stauffer System moulded into the iron, and looks like it was red at some time (not that that helps in working out what it did/does!)

Both the 3rd bit in the first picture and the motor look they should be bolted somewhere.

No idea what the bits in the 5th picture are for, or where they might go.

And the last picture shows a leather belt drive (from the motor to the large wheel?), some more cast iron bits, some bolts, nuts and washers and a ‘something’ (on the left) which is mainly wood.

Do I know what it is?  No.

But my WAG is that it was some sort of clutch mechanism for a flat-belt drive system.  I would guess that the cam on the lower shaft of the frame lifted up a transfer pulley that removed the tension from the belt passing over it.

Thanks, Lew. What you suggest makes sense, but sadly we will probably never know. I wonder how many other unidentified bits of machinery are just sitting around waiting for a new project? Millions I guess!

maybe some kinda stamping machines  like putting letters in something  or pins something like that
