You may remember the video i put up about casting a large steam engine cylinder.
Steady progress has been made machining it up.
Originaly i was going th build a mill engine but was talked around in to building a marine unit
Anyhow you like pictures

Going well John
Where did the blood come from ?
Stew
-
Looking good John.
The spattered specs show just how much effort you've put in, so far........ :D
David D
-
That is pretty big.
Engine builders allways leave little on himself on every engine he builds: usually it is blood.
Pekka
-
Its not blood its red paint (mind you i have bled for this engine)

Time for a crank shaft
I was going to build a disc type (nice and easy) then Rob Wilson recond a built up crank would be easy :) :) :) :) :)
The engine will have a 3.4 inch stroke so the crank will be a nice meaty job
The 2 webs were welded together then machined in to submission
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6040035-1.jpg)
A bit of en8 bar wea turned up for the big end 7/8 diamiter with 3/4 shoulders 3 thou interfierence fit in the webs
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6040051.jpg)
25 mm stainless bar for the mains this was turned between centers (my first attempt at this )_
Turned down to be a nice fit in the webs then a 3 thou press fit
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6070012.jpg)
Rob pressed the job together for me 10 ton was mentioned.
Just to make sure i welded it as well
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6070017.jpg)
Back between centers for a final clean up
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6080031.jpg)
Welding allowed me to put fillets on the webs
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6080029.jpg)
To say i am pleased with the finished job would be a understatement
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P6090006-1.jpg)
Even took some video of it going around

Good going John  - this is a nice BIG 'un :D
I love your drive dog :)
Regards, Arnold

Those glass drive dogs are top notch, where did you get them from John.
:D
Stew

That's going to be some monster of an engine. :bugeye:
Great work John.
Bernd
-
Gonna be a big one. Are you going to power anything with it?
Eric
-
I think i should make some drive dogs as i am now addicted to turning between centers. :D :D :) :)
The dog in the picture came with a toy tool set i had as a child

While thinking about a base for the engine (woodern pattern) :( :( :( :( :(
Deceded to make the piston :dremel: :dremel:
Thought about using O rings :bugeye: :bugeye: :bugeye: hopefully this engine will see steam so proper piston rings it is :) :) :)

Hi
Got a little bit more done
I needed a lump of bronze flat bar 1 inch thick by 3 inches square for the big end
It is nice to have a furnace
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7200008.jpg)
Flat bar cast up
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7190040.jpg)
Machined to size cut in half then bored to fit the crank pin (i turned a dummy pin to dead size and one .001 smaller)
To use as test pieces
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7200012.jpg)
Very happy with the fit Jjust nipping but still free enough to turn)
Con rod will be next
John
-
Nice work John.
Pat J

That's going to be some engine John! :bugeye:
You're putting a lot of good work into it......
David D

Nice work!
Eric
-
Had a day off work (so i spent it working in the shop ) :loco: :loco:
Made a start on the con rod , i was going to machine it from soild but decided on a fabricated job
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7210016.jpg)

Finally a bit of stress relief
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7210031.jpg)
Shoild get it machined tomorrow
John

How will the CI ring wear in the bronze cylinder ?
I have only used CI rings in CI cylinders , I do use 'O' rings in bronze or soft packing
Nice work BTW I am not criticising just asking as I am knocking up a triple expansion engine that uses a bronze block and bronze rings , I an thinking of using CI as i know it will work
Stuart
-
Very nice work, I am very inpressed with the crank. is this engine going in a boat when finished?
Mike
-
Hi
Stuart
I think the iron rings and piston should work ok
(if anyone has views i would like to hear them)
Mike
It would certainly power a boat but sadly i have no room for one
John

Got a bit more done this weekend
Started on the cross head guide
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7260173.jpg)
I had a hell of a job trying to clamp things in to place and then drill and tap them
The weld tacks will be milled off :D :D :D
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7260180.jpg)
Bolted and dowell pinned
Propper job
John
-
Hi
Got a bit more done
All the welds machined off everything debured and cleaned up
The dowel pins make for a nice job
Machined a big lump of bronze in to a cross gead guide
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P7300210.jpg)

Hi
Made a start on the cross head
Starting to get to grips with the rotary table
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8020343.jpg)

Developing very nicely John!
Keep on, keeping on.......
David D
-
nice RT work
That's going to be one hell of a powerfull engine John, It'll need a big boiler, have you any plans to power something with it ?.
Stew
-
Hi
Rotary tables are a steep learning curve
Pleased with the result though
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8040367.jpg)
I had a feeling this was inside the other half of this block
The hard bit is getting it out
The rod needs cutting to length some threads and silver solder
A bit of taper turning and some file work
John
-
Hi
Finally got the cross head to go up and down
I made up a dummy con rod to get the length right
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8060371.jpg)
I could not help running it up in the lathe

Blummin well done John!
David D
-
Very nice John, you intending to power the house with this or something?! It's a fair size!
-
Hi
Made a start on the front colums (22 mill stainless round bar)
Drill and tap one end screw cut the other and set to length.
They looked ok but very plane
Rob wilson recond on a taper .
Out with my freshly made drive dog
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8080395.jpg)

The surface finish is astounding (for me )
-
They look good John.
(I reckon that Rob Wilson knows a thing or two).
David D
-
Very nice job going on here, I like to see an engine come together with each part dictating what comes next, and the ability to decide on the fly, how to do each little bit. It makes for a very personal engine, and I have to say, you are going to need a real boiler for that job, when it is finished. Cheers, Mad Jack
-
Hi
Made a start on the pattern for the bottom cylinder cover
MDF glued together
Needs a bit of filleting and some paint
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8130002.jpg)

Got a little bit more done
I need some bronze so i can cast the cylinder lower cover
The price of scrap bronze has gone through the roof :( :( :(
Made the lids for the main bearing oil boxes instead
Replaced the cap heads with studs & nuts

Got a bit more done
Bottom cylinder cover machined
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8290077.jpg)
Faced the gland side bored it then made a mandrell
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P8300079.jpg)

I had a lesson in marking out as the hole centers for the colums are very critical
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P9040142.jpg)
Starting to look like a engine now

Hi
Got a big bit done it is nearly a runner
Time for a fly wheel
I had a 8 inch disc with a hole in it about the size i wanted but a bit thin
A centre boss was turned up on my boxford
The big bit was possible for me to machine but it would have taken a long time
Rob Wilson kindly offerd to rough it out for me on his referbished cub lathe
(Robs idea of roughing out is different from mine) needless to say it turned out perfect.
Time to cut a key way in the crank
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P9150150.jpg)
The proportions are just right
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/P9160156.jpg)
Could not resist making it spin around
Click the picture

Hi
I managed to bore the exentric casting with out going to big
I cobbled a valve rod together and a temp valve cover
A blast of ar and it trundled in to life
No rings packing or gaskets at all
Valve timing set very near

Nah - rather than the brown stuff, I think that just maybe we're going to see old-style iron platework?

Very nice looking engine John. Can't wait to see and here a vid of it ticking over.

John
Well John, I'll second that!! You've got a very nice setup there, the whole build was a piece of work to watch and enjoy, I envy your boiler, getting a steamer up and having a boiler sitting ready to fire up is a treat to all who have been watching, and wishing to hear her run, as well as see her. Air doesn't replace steam, but only gives a hint of what the steam will do. Very fine work on the patterns, the castings, on top of all the fine machine work. I hope to have a furnace at the end of the winter so I can do some casting. It looks to change everything. I know how hard I have to look to find bits and pieces that will fill the hole, and being able to cast exactly the right part has to be the cat's meow. Sure wish I could smell the steam and the burnt oil smell that goes with it. :jaw: :bugeye:  Cheers, on a very fine job showing how it's done. mad jack

Hi
Lads
Got some more bits made
Oil lube box this has a wick feed in to the cross head guide
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PB010063.jpg)
Oil from this runs through the cross head then down a drilling through the con rod in to the big end
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PB010066.jpg)
Seems to work fine
Made a cylinder displacement lubricator
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/PB010065.jpg)
What do you lads use for cylinder oil
Some reversing gear will be next ,Then a paint job
John

More nice work John!
You need steam cylinder oil!

Nice going John
How did you make the lid for the oil box ? - it looks like the lid is made from plate, but the hinges looks cast
, Arnold

Hi
Arnold
The box and lid are brass plate
The hinge is some brass tube silver solderd on with a stainless welding rod as a pin

That is without a doubt, absolutely amazing. Super impressive stuff.

Hi
Time to finish this engine
After a couple of hours running i took it apart tonight
No wear at all on any of the bearings the cylinder and rings are bedding in nice
Machined a recess in the base plate for the reverse eccentric (time to make it go backwards)

I have no idea how I missed this project before.... but there's only one thing I can say about it:
:jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw: :jaw:
Love the casting work, love the machining work, love the look of the whole thing (hmm, except for that crosshead block, I'd have made it curved to match the other bit - but hey, that's such a tiny nitpick it barely deserves a mention and besides, it's much better machining than I've ever done), and I especially love the sound it makes on steam at low RPMs - exactly like a steam locomotive.
Absolutely fabulous work, John, if I can be 10% as accomplished as you then I will feel like I'm on top of the world.

Hi
Nick
I want to make it reversable hence 2 eccentrics
John

I worked that out John ... just wondered why you made 2 more rather than just 1 more and use the old one too? Presume they are different to the old one in some way?
-
Hi
Nick
I have used the original
(i cast 2 just to be safe in case i messed up the machining)
The spare one will be remelted
John

Ah I see, lovely work anyway

Hi John
Blast from the past MOWOG ..
On some of the castings .. long time ago a lad I worked with had a ( Morris ??? BMC ??? ) engine to power his Narrow Boat ... I remember MOWOG on that when we rebuilt it ..
Being a Biker I was amazed at pinch bolts on the little end of the con-rod .. No idea whether that was peculiar to the Marine ...( canal boats marine ? ) engine or not .
Not a BL fan myself .. had a Marina 1.8 Estate for 7 weeks ... absolute camel .. :bang:
BC

Marina
The 1.8 was a good engine
The rest of the car was a disaster

On my recent visit to your establishment, young Mr. Stilldrillin', I got the impression you were somewhat 'sick and tired' of being 'sick and tired' of oversize DC motors. ???
Or have things changed??
BC

Nothing's changed Dave. Still don't like oversize components....... :(
That motor/ dynamo is right where we left it. Where I keep tripping over it........ :palm:

I was wondering as well but I would venture a guess and say that it means Dave #4 or D4 seeing as there are so many guys named Dave.
My son has 3 close friends that are called Dave. When ever we talk about them we say Dave, D2 or D3. That is the only way we can keep them straight without having to use last names.
Cheers

Dear Baffled of Belper...... Dave BC.
Defor?
Hmmmm....... Glad you asked that, Dave. I think!
Defor..... David! (Surprisingly).
Often used to slip it in to Nightshift Oppo's notes.... "All set for you, again. Just press button". Sort of thing......
Then into emails to friends, as a smile.......
How many Dave/ ids are on here? AND..... To be honest, You are David Daniels. I'm David Jones...... Confusing innit!!
So, Defor has come out of the toy cupboard, and David has been added to the sig. line.....
Confused/ amused? Yeah..... Why not!! :D
Good 'ere, innit!
Defor.

Nah, Ade. .... Welsh for David is Daffyd ... or is it Welsh for ducks ??? Whatever ...
Anyway, thanks for clearing it up Defor, Dave, Stilldrillin' or to whom it may concern etc. etc. It's just too damn complicated for me ...
Have some more to be going on with ..
