Title: perma newb checking in from KY
Post by: tony ennis on September 09, 2010, 09:48:02 PM
Hello, I just joined the site.  I've been slowly getting a shop up and running as time and finances permit.  I have an Craftsman 12" lathe I repaired that I should have scrapped, a grinder, and not enough sense to quit!

Ok, the grinder died this evening.  At least I won't be using a lot of electricity!

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the collective.  :borg:

Sounds like you've got a good start with getting your lathe working. What kind of grinder do you have?

Pics would be nice if possible, I have trouble reading a lot of words. Keep falling asleep while I read.

All kidding as side a few pics in the "gallery" part of the forum would be great. And as Don said, "have questions, just ask". Everybody here has an opinion.  :)

Hi Tony,
Welcome to the collective!  :borg:

We need some idea of what you're into. With pics.

You need to join in, with whatever you'd like to comment on. Or ask about.

Enjoy!

The grinder is an old Home Center Delta 6".  It's almost 20 years old.  Maybe it's just a bad capacitor.  RPMs dropped by about 15% while I was using it and it got hot.  And smelled funny.

The lathe is a low-end A/C 12".  I have some pictures of the resurrection.

My interest and ambition has come and gone a few times over the last few years.  You can dig through my blog for some of the pain.

It starts here, towards the end (http://tony-stormcrow.blogspot.com/2007/10/my-new-lathe.html) of 2007.

Here are some highlights.

Some pain... (http://tony-stormcrow.blogspot.com/2007/11/headstock.html) which continues into the next month.

There isn't a lot in 2008.

Replacing the craptastic part 9-11 (http://tony-stormcrow.blogspot.com/2009/06/replacing-atlascraftsman-part-9-11.html)
Power in the shop! (http://tony-stormcrow.blogspot.com/2010/04/power-and-new-toolpost-for-lathe.html)
Oh, and the compound was abused too. (http://tony-stormcrow.blogspot.com/2010/05/compound.html)
a new bench (http://tony-stormcrow.blogspot.com/2010/06/lathe-bench.html)

There's some other stuff out there too that may or may not be interesting.

Tomorrow I'll try to fit a backplate to my 4-jaw. I've never done it, should be interesting.

Nice pics.

I think you need a bigger lathe for that "sturdy" bench you built.   NICE
