Hello to all, I thought you may like to see my shaper project.
Found the old 1930's drawings on the net and made new drawings in Metric and it's all
welded/bolted. It took days to cut the bullgear and things got a bit boring.
I notice people ask for pictures so will attach. Regards.

Fabulous job!

Very nice machine build.

Hi, I must say, I'm very proud of my atlas shaper, and it was bought, that's a beautiful piece of machinery, and I think very well designed. It makes me a tiny bit jealous  thanks for sharing that particularly the pictures. cheers, Jack

What you have accomplished there is amazing. You certainly can be proud of your work on this shaper. I would be interested in seeing a link to the original drawing from the 1930's. It goes to show what one can accomplish when they set their mind to it. I look forward to seeing more posts of some of your work in progress. :D :D
Cheers

To Rob,
I cut the gears on the mill drill with rotary table

First class job

Gorgeous work. Shapers are a lost art these days.
-
I'm interested in the plans too. I notice the table arrangement is different than most that I've seen.

Plans & Pics have been posted on Homemodelenginemachinist. 3-parts. in the Download section. Regards.

Lovely piece of work. Very nice machine you've put together. Congratulations!

Great job there!!! You really did a nice job fabbing the parts up. Your going to have fun running that. Thanks for sharing.
-
Absolutely awesome job. The machine looks very nice, hope it works as nice as it looks.
Any chance you have cad drawings along with the pdf prints?
-
WOW, i saved the package for future projects, always wanted a shaper.
Wonderfull job, i envy your skill.
-
Very impressive. I saved the metric plans for future reference.
On a related note.
I have always wanted a small hand powered shaper. The small Armstrong types are not common this side of the channel.
I was following a build on another forum, where the guy had started on the old Popular mechanics hand powered Shaper that's plans are all over the net, unfortunately he had to stop due to personal reasons.
Aside from the aforementioned, there doesn't appear to be a current build of the Popular Mechanics version.
For some while I have been thinking about converting the Popular Mechanics plans to metric, but I'm still fighting Sketchup (The closest thing I have to a CAD programme at the moment)

That is a fantastic job, beautifully finished. Would it be possible to share the drawings...I would love a shaper, but they are very rare here in Germany and very expensive to ship (or even to travel to examine a purchase). I guess i could make many of the smaller parts on my lathe and mill (both desktop) and could subcontract out the larger parts.
The drawings would be a greta resource for the group.
hope I'm not asking too much,.....please..

Hi Airbus,
would really like a link to the plans - I looked on the modelengine BBS and found that all 3 references were pictures - no plans. i looked in the files and all 3 references also gave the same set of pics. Can anyone help?

I just checked this link and it gives you the dimensions

Did you have any trouble with twisting/warping metal after welding?

I have seen a lot of fab jobs before, but that takes them all by storm. You are truly a craftsman in the finest. My hat is off to you. The machine you built is a "Pootatuck Shaper". If any one would like to have the original plans with dimensions , I would be glad to post them. Just let me know. The original was made of cast iron. I was going to check out at the foundry near me about what it would run to pour the parts. Maybe some day. Again a beautiful job.

As you'll note "Airbus" is longer a memeber. Don't know why, but is listed as a guest now and won't be able to respond I believe.

Yes, a copy of the original drawings to go with the metric ones would be a great asset, and I would love a copy. I would also dearly love to find a source to cast the components, leaving final machining and assembly in my small workshop - a kit of parts would really sell well, I'm sure.

Really like that design and execution,
I never had a shaper, I'm a little tool envy now
I hope to find the drawing and some some construction instructions. I don't see myself building anything this big yet, but that definately would be a good solid project after I have my current projects rady.

What happened to the photos? I could not even access the plans at HMEM.
Thanks,
