Hello,
Yep I do, I would like to respectfully ask some of you to stop taking over the OP post. It seems to be happening more and more.
Some of the OP are quite new to machining, and when their post goes off at tangent, I’m sure they must feel utterly lost.
Have a thought for the OP, think where the question is coming from, read the question and if you can answer it, but PLEASE let us not answer our own questions.
If you have something to say – great, - (I for one will read it) start a new post.

I thought it was Original Poster! I remember once when I had just joined a forum and came across the acronym OP and well, a funny story really but what happened was ....
Only joking DaveH - you make a good point!

Yer right Dave!

I'm not really old I have just been pretending, so all you old folk on here didn't feel out of place
All the David's; John's; Peter's; Bob's, just to mention a few :) :) :)
Now for my Posts I enjoy the off road excursion - heck, I even encourage it (as do some others) for me it is all part of the fun.
So lets have some fun. :D :D :D

I agree to a point, but isn't this part of human nature as well?
Just think about how a conversation goes when people get together and chat. They wander from topic to topic, sometimes coming back full circle to what they started talking about.
I think different people have different ideas about what "related" is, and something that doesn't seem to be on topic at first might just spark some ideas to help the "OP" out with their "OT" (creative license: "original topic", as opposed to "off topic").
Some of the threads that start out with a question that could be answered with Google and 30 seconds of any computer illiterate person's time actually get more interesting as they go farther and farther off topic.
There are definitely limits to this logic, but this is one of the best forums I've ever found to find threads that DO stay on topic and do so in a very respectful manner. I don't think I've even once seen the acronyms "GIYF" or "RTFM" here, although it may be tempting from time to time, sometimes even warranted.
That reminds me of a great recipe for pumpkin pie that I thought you'd all enjoy:
2 cups pumpkin
3 eggs
<insert sly smirk>

I`ve never had pumpkin pie but I do love slow cooked steak pie - large stake skirt cut into small pieces, slow cooker with a bit of gravy mix and browning with a large finely chopped onion. 6 hours and then put it in the oven with a puff pastry topping.

Ahh.... I was thinking up all sorts of other phrases to fit them (got a few unprintable ones, lots of little asterisk's  )
Just assumed that if they came from some of those other IMHO horrible forums that they would be very caustic!?
Just to add to the other element of the thread..... Pumpkin pie? Why? Pies should have nice fillings.... Steak, chicken, custard.........
(I'm 98% carnivore BTW  )

Funny that, pies were mentioned and I considered savory fillings! Damn apple pie didn`t even get a look in...

even more :offtopic:
What's this about pies? the only way I can conceive a connection between OP (= Theakston's "Old Peculier" (http://www.theakstons.co.uk/ales/classics/oldpeculier.html)) and pies is maybe using OP in a steak & ale pie? - but I'd rather just drink it! cheers

The only thing before this that I know of called OP is an old Swedish aqua vitae or schnaps called OP Anderssons´s.
A very tasty drink flavoured with cumin, aniseed, and fennel. Yummy!

Back to seriousness.
Topic wandering. Happens on message boards as it does in real life. Can we stop it? Do we want to stop it? More than once a question is asked, it gets answered but because of the way the thread goes, we learn something else. Sometimes it wanders so far off topic that we get lost.
So where do we draw the line? What I may see as staying on topic someone may see as off topic. Or vice versa.
Should the OP (original poster) step in on their own thread and steer it back? Is that the moderators responsibility?
What do people think? What is YOUR opinion??
Eric

up to us
-
Ha!
Now I wander... see our avatars jim? Anything in common?
-
Hello Eric,
I do not think it should be left to the Mods, that puts an intolerable strain on the Mods.
It is normal forum etiquette to stay on topic, and I think it is Rule No4 here “Stay on Topic”
My objection is when 2 or 3 members start and discus their own topic sometimes totally irrelevant to the OP, even gets a little heated sometimes.
I don’t care about my posts it does not bother me, nor does it bother a lot of members it can add to the fun.
All I am saying if the OP is new to machining be careful and try to answer the question without going off at a tangent.
I have noticed over the last 3 months or so it seems to have got worst, and I just thought I would comment on it.

Dave,
I know we're all mucking about here. But many of us do try to aid the new members.
But just as Eric said, wandering is what happens in real life. It's so very hard to control!
Everyone who has read this thread will undoubtedly have the main message of it rattling round in thier heads when talking to "newbies" and will hopefully remember to answer the questions that were asked
Ralph.

100% agree with everything said. There is nothing wrong with wondering as it normally is interesting or informative and on the odd occasion when it has happened to me and I really need an answer and think the off topic rants have lost focus of the thread, I say so and bring it back on topic.
I don`t mind a bit of wandering.... ummmm... pies!!
EDIT - just while I`m ranting...(because I have tried to tame my ranting over the lasy year!!) the thing that annoys me more than anything is inappropriate and poorly labeled subjects headers to threads!!! grrrrr!!!
-
... the thing that annoys me more than anything is inappropriate and poorly labeled subjects headers to threads!!! grrrrr!!!
If you figure out a solution to that one, please forward it to 98% of the people who send me email during my day job!!!
Maybe we should have this thread renamed "Meandering Threads" ;)

Since we are
straying off topic (SOT) here and listing some of our pet peeves (PP) I thought I would pop in here with one of mine. It seems that some people are in so much of a hurry or are to lazy to type/write/speak that they have to reduce everything to code. That would be fine if everyone was programmed with the same code, but they are not. Here are a few acronym's that I found recently in post's. Some I think I know the meaning. Some I have guessed the meaning but could be wrong. Some can have different meanings depending on what the conversation or subject is that is being discussed. JBYKWTAM don't expect everyone else too.
I would like 2 things here.
1. Your comments

When you're confused, use the acronym dictionary...
http://www.acronymfinder.com/
In high school English classes we were taught to define any uncommon acronym the first time it was used. Part of the problem arises from newcomers to the web. Acronyms like SWMBO, OTOH, BTW are so familiar to web regulars that no one would think of defining them but, for a newcomer, they can be puzzling.
-
You learn something every day. I'm an old hand when it comes to posting in forums. Been posting to them since the days of Prodigy (how far back does that go?). But until now, I've never even heard of OTOH.
Where I work, acronyms (initialisms, technically) are used as often as the word "the". I think it is a roadblock to effective communication which is important for new-hires. It took three years before I could follow a conversation around here. Thing is, they get used so much, many people here don't even know what the expansion is when you ask them.
-
Adding to the list a few of mine:
IMHO In My Humble Opinion
NIMBY Not In My Back Yard
NPT National Pipe Taper
DOA Dead On Arrival
RTFM Read The F****g Manual
ROTFLMAO Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off (old one from gaming)
RAN Regional Area Network (telecom)
I definately recognize Troutsqueezers description. Nearly 20 yers ago i joined a telecoms company to work as a tech writer but it took the best part of the first six months to de-cipher what was talked and written about since more than 10% of the text included three-letter abbreviations. After six months the "inauguration" was over and I could read and understand .
I guess that this is common to any line of work, but it is very typical of telecoms.

DOA Put wood in't hole

So many won't get that!!
Have to agree with Troutsqueezer here.... Not that it's particularly important here but. Initialisms are when you use the initial letters to shorten the phrase/description and acronyms are when that initialism creates a pronounceable word like NASA, Scuba etc..... FWIR
But then from what little I do remember from English lessons it gets all complicated and stuff like. When they start mixing abbreviations and acronyms and initialisms all together!! :bugeye: (Yes I know.... It's youf speak init! Something else that gets you lost easily! :palm: )
The link Marv gave is a really good one. Got lost long ago and that one helped me out
Ralph.
FWIR.... Brit' version of IIRC ...... From What I Remember  (the IIRC was the one that stumped me... If I Remember (Recall) Correctly.
